Starblend Snake Mask Empty Starblend Snake Mask

Post by Denise Cold Thu May 10, 2012 2:42 am

So I got my green and blue Starblends and decided to try the Mark Reid Snake Mask that is so popular at the Texas State Fair. I LOVE it! I did one that was more traditional where I tried the eyes. I even used yellow Starblends for that but my black was too wet so there is some bleeding but I'm sure it would be easier on a client.

The second green one I didn't try the eyes or use any white and used all black on one eye and a mix of black and starblend on the other. I also used the BAM stencils for texture. The green and yellow doesn't cover as well as the red and orange but I still like it. I should have reloaded for the forehead to get more green on there but it still looks cool.

I bet a blue and orange or yellow would look really cool too.

D.

Very cool Denise! I've tried to do the Mark Reid snake face a couple of times, and it always takes me way too long. Plus I don't really like doing the eyes on top of the eyelids as it always seems to smudge so quickly... so I'm going to try adapting it more to your second snake mask, it looks a lot simpler!

I'm not very good at the eyes either. He makes it look so easy. I have seen other face painters do the eyes higher on the lid so I might try that because I do like the look.

Oh, by the way, I realized that if you texture with powder on powder it will be too easy to blend and smudge. So either use paint on Starblend or Starblend on paint for the BAM stencils.

I LOVE IT!

So Denise...how often would you say you're using your Starblends and Ben Nye now vs. regular paint?

Starblend Snake Mask Empty Re: Starblend Snake Mask

Post by Denise Cold Thu May 10, 2012 1:07 pm

Good question. For boy stuff, yes, I'm loving the Starblends. I haven't tried them on sweaty kids yet because it's just spring, but I'll probably just take paper towels and have them wipe as others have suggested. I'm working on a Hulk and Two-face and Captain America with the green and blue. I must say I'm having a hard time with the blue though...not nearly as opaque as the red. I might have to use Suzy's puff trick.

I'm still using the Ben Nye as a supplement to girl designs. Maybe it's because I love the TAG pearls so much that I still use them all the time for girls and just give them eyeshadow or if I have a little girl, I'll use them as a base and then one-stroke or teardrop. I'll use them on women as a base for swirly Pashur type designs and I like that so I don't have to sponge and get it on their mascara. Now that I got some BAM stencils, I'm going to use the powders to texturize paint designs. I think there will be more control.

Great ideas, Denise. We learn so much from you. I NEVER used my Starblends 'till you posted pics & ideas. Lately they're my "go-to" for squirmy boys & most spideys. Now I need to break down & get the Ben Nye Lumiere pallette because of what you just posted! (Also watched you using it in videos) I often have teens & adults who would DEF benefit if I used it as a base for their eye design. Thanks...AGAIN!

You make me want to buy more starblends! LOL I have red, black, and white. Love them!

I think green would be a great accent color for zombies, too.

Boys are such big babies so more powders are the way to go! LOL

Denise, you helped me make up my mind about what I wanted for a Mother's Day present from the hubby. I only had the red Starblend (love it) and some pressed powders I made. My present is nine more Starblends (skipped the purple) and a Ben Nye 12! cheers It's good to have a man who understands my obsession.

I didn't order any brown tones cause I wasn't sure which ones would work best. Any advice?

I haven't tried the browns yet but Miss Ronnie had a cool lion on the other thread. The coverage on the green and blue isn't as good compared to the red and orange but the green made great Hulk eyes. I think I'm going to get those puffs that Suzy suggested or try sponges.

Wonder if those makeup wedge sponges would work with the Starblends. Will have to try that one when they come in. I do remember seeing the lion but there are quite a few threads on Starblends and I don't have time to look through them right now. Hubby wants to go to an auction this morning...that's kinda his thing.

There are a lot of different "browns" in the Starblends since they are in fact "pancake makeup". Was just thinking of maybe a dark and a lighter tone but there is an "Oriental" that has yellow tones that might be good for a lion.

Any thoughts, Miss Ronnie?

Martha, on another thread I mentioned that, while visting a Christmas Festival @ Lake Lanier, GA, I talked w/the Face Painter there. For the month of December, she applied Starblends quickly (LONG lines!) w/small, white cosmetic sponges. They're so cheap, she discarded after each use. She said they worked well. I still use smoothies.

You really have to make sure there is no sticky stuff or sweat on the kid's face... even tear stains will cause uneven coverage with Starblends.

I carry a canister of wipes made for the face and either let the parent wipe them or if they allow me to, I GENTLY clean it for them and then their face must be totally dry. If you have a line, you may need to ask them to step back and go next while their face dries completely... a paper towel doesn't always do the trick. But I only do this if I visibly see moisture or gook on their face.

We've already got kids sweating at the ball park and find the Starblend over paint is sssssssssssssooooooooooooooooo wonderful with BAM stencils. The detail to masks and snakes is great quick and effective. So loving using the stencils for adding a little texture, we are doing production line there so it is just a little dept and texture we're going for. Wouldn't want to do a gig with out Starblend.

I have both smoothies and the wedges and may do a comparison with pics when the Starblends come in.

Here's a snake done on the job. She was so cute. Came back 3 times. She wanted her WHOLE face covered and didn't want the eyes done that's why it's orange on the chin.

The Starblends saved my life on this little monkey. Parents didn't care what I put on him so I choose my easy monster mask. I had a split green sponge all loaded and he about did a back flip to avoid the sponge. I grabbed my orange starblend and did him up without a flinch (lots of wiggles hence the linework probs, but no flinching)...of course I found out later that he's the one that ripped my tent...grrr. The design was well chosen.

I put a pink and orange Starblend tiger on myself, didn't feel a thing the whole time. Definitely attracted attention because the pink is so bright.

The best colors for me so far are the orange, pink & red. They look and cover almost like paint. I've used the white the most because of animal designs, spidey and the skull. Green and Blue aren't going on as well. They are more like the white. The yellow is somewhere in-between...the only place it goes thin is on my less textured skin like the tip of my nose. I'm going to get a brown for puppies and maybe a tan so I can make monkeys. Miss Ronnie will be swatching soon so I can see if I want them.

I may try the blue and green wet as an experiment. I lose the "don't like wet" appeal but that's mostly around the eyes...and then they would dry like a powder so would be more sweat proof?

Hi Denise
I read another thread about starblends, it mentions using them wet and then they dry back into the powder look. May be easier for even coverage... Ps mind if I borrow your cute monster?? I'm really liking all your great designs.

Just keep in mind ...once you wet the Starblends, you either continue to use them wet or have to scrape the top layer off to use them dry again.
