Scented facepaints?
After taking a makeup for theatre class this semester, I've decided to do some facepainting this summer both for personal use and in hopes of making some money to pay for school. I've been researching the different brands of paints I could get, and many of you mentioned 'perfumed' or 'fragranced' paints. Brands of that sort that were mentioned included both Kryolan and Paradise.
I've used Kryolan Aquacolors and I don't *think* it was scented (how do you scent a cake of watercolor-like paint anyway?). But I'm not sure how old they were either. They definitely didn't bother me, though.
I've got asthma and am extremely sensitive to scents, so that's why I'm concerned about it.

You don't want to add anything to your face paints, except water. There are a couple of brands that are manufactured with a subtle fragrance to them; most notably Paradise (faint coconut/suntan lotion fragrance) and FAB (slight perfumey fragrance). TAG, Wolfe, DFX, and Kryolan are all unscented.
Re: Scented facepaints?
Thanks for explaining! I'll stay away from FAB then, but Paradise should be fine as coconut doesn't bug me...
Re: Scented facepaints?
Whether Kryolan is deliberately scented or not, it smells like ivory soap. Snazaroo doesn't smell either and was left out of the unscented list.
Re: Scented facepaints?
I think Kryolan smells, I can't place it, maybe it is soapy, but it flared my asthma. A lot of people are bothered by the paradise, but it doesn't bother me. I have steered clear of the FAB because of the perfume scent reviews. They are made this way, you wouldn't add the scent.
To be careful I would stick with Snazaroo, DFX, TAG, and WOLFE. They have no scent .

Re: Scented facepaints?
Really interesting about Kryolan - I coulda sworn it didn't smell like anything (although I use Ivory soap myself at home so perhaps I didn't notice) when I used it at school. But we have about three or four different smelly asthma triggers in our makeup rooms so the combination of those might wipe out a little soapy smell, lol.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with it!

Re: Scented facepaints?
I don't like wearing paradise because I will get a headache from the scent after about an hour. But then I am extremely sensitive to chemicals. I don't wear makeup because I have yet to find a brand that doesn't make me itch. I am excited that most facepaints seem to be fine for me. Starblends do dry my skin out very quickly, as in my nose will start peeling. But I am a freak of nature when it comes to make up or beauty products.
Re: Scented facepaints?
If you are sensitive, definitely stay away from FAB for awhile. I only got one color to try it out and I wish I had gotten something other than RED! When my Snaz red runs out I will have to use it all the time and in addition to personally hating the smell, I'm terrified some poor child will react to it! Maybe I should post it in the swap shop since I think I've only used it twice so far!

Re: Scented facepaints?
That's interesting about the Kryolan... I don't use it and I made my comment based on all I've read here about it in the past...(must not have read enough!) I didn't realize it had an ivory soap kind of smell...thanks for setting me straight, Perry!
Re: Scented facepaints?
Not a problem... it's just a weird smell to come from paint to me, so it bugs me a bit... along with the fact that I can never get anything more than translucent junk from kryolan, but it's the only UV stuff I've got, so meh.
Re: Scented facepaints?
Agree that Kryolan has a faint smell. Definitely not as strong as Paradise (smell I like) or FAB (which I think stinks).

Re: Scented facepaints?
I think Kryolan has a fragrance for sure. Fab has a pretty strong one, but they reduced it, it used to be overwhelming. Paradise is strong, but the fragrance is a natural based one, not chemical. Wolfe has a "smell" but not a fragrance, if that makes sense, and so does Snaz, to me. But I can't smell anything with Tag or DFX. That is just me. I have some of all of it. Love if when I open my kit...get that smell, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy (or maybe that is the drinking... JK)
Re: Scented facepaints?
I have one cake of Paradise, and I was very surprised at the strength of the scent. But I opened it and left the lid off, and now you can barely notice it at all. Can you do that with the FAB?
The Paradise cake I have is the only scented one I own.

Re: Scented facepaints?
I have seen on other threads that even when you leave the lid off, as soon as you rewet the FAB, the smell comes back. :-(. The smell from my paradise paints has faded very quickly. It makes me sad actually...

Re: Scented facepaints?
The smell from the FAB definitely reactivates even after you think it's gone. It even lingers on your skin after you wash the paint off!

Re: Scented facepaints?
I still disagree about the FAB smell lingering.... but I am possibly a skunk who can't smell their own stink! Also, I don't have any of my paints sitting solo in their own original containers... they're all smushed in the bead organizer and I don't smell anything, except that sweet smell of "Ooooo, I get to paint!"
Re: Scented facepaints?
I repotted all my stuff Miss Ronnie. Have some of the FAB glitter gold and the FAB silver. I can definitely smell it when I use those. I don't smell them when I open the case anymore. I don't have allergies or asthma so it doesn't but me that way. Just not a smell I like. Unlike you I like the smell of castile soap. To each his own I guess.
