Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
I was wondering if there was such a thing as online rentals for videos like Jinny's that you guys know of? I really want to see the video, but I don't want to add yet another video to our overstocked cabinet. It's $40 at SF and I know you get what you pay for, but sometimes, it's hard to justify paying for better. I wish we had something like a face painter's library where you could check out videos (with your credit card as a place marker) watch them and then return them...kind of like a Netflix of Face Painting.
Since that's not going to happen, I guess I'll have to be happy with finding a sale of some sort. Does anyone know of one?

Those particular videos are very over priced for the market... most retailers have trouble moving them.
A lending library is actually a great idea... if I had any I would loan them, but I don't watch videos or DVDs unless the Starship Enterprise is involved.

Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
Why do they insist on such a high price point if the retailers can't move them? Makes little sense to me! But of course, I don't have lofty ambitions
Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
I dunno... I know video production can be expensive, but it doesn't cost as much as it used to.
Pricing lower would move more units you'd think.
With DVDs I understand it is cheaper now to knock off the copies, easier to ship, etc.

Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
I watched her vids at a friends house.. I lost interest and litterally turned them off... she's a really nice person, but her voice kinda puts me to sleep! I don't know why.. maybe the accent?? it lulls me like a lullaby!
Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
If your are around Denmark sometimes, you are welcome to see them and ther rest of my oversized makeup book/magazine/dvd collection (I have a thing for books...).
But, yes, they are overprized. But still good enough for me to want to keep them.

Thanks LW, I'll let you know the next time I just HAPPEN to be in the "area"...maybe the next time I go to make a McDonald's run...
I wonder what it would take to start a lendinig library for face painters...

Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
That might be an interesting idea...
I would "rent" a copy, maybe from an on-line vendor such as the face paint forum shop, for the cost of a new copy or reduced if it's used. If it's never returned, the the shop isn't out anything. BUT, I would have the option to return it, like a rental, and have a portion of the purchase price refunded to me.
So, let's say I'd like to see "Painting Faces" video, retails for $20.
Metina offers is new for $20, used for $15
I decide to buy a brand new one. I watch it as soon as it arrives and I'm a bit disappointed because I was looking for something specific and "Painting Faces" wasn't it.
I return the movie with a restocking fee. (maybe 25-50%?)
I didn't have to keep a movie that I didn't like, Metina got to earn a profit. Everybody is happy?

I like that idea! I'm a book person, I keep going through my books. But videos like Mark Reid's and Jinny's, I'd probably watch only once and then it would get closeted, so they would be poor investments for me.
Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
I have all of Jinny's VHS and DVds. I just lent them out last week. I would suggest that you ask all of your painter friends in your area and see if they have any. That's what we do over here. They are costly and honestly, they weren't my favorite. I recently got Mark Reid's boys will be boys and Rebeccas arty brush strokes one and I enjoyed them.

Sure, you can visit any time. I can also send the dvd's, the books are too heavy. Or have some with me next time I'm in CPH. But not all, there are too many *lol*
Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
While I love the concept of a lending library, I feel like I kinda need to play the other side of the coin. These guys are painters all like us and most of them probably paid for the production from their own pocket and are still trying to recoup the cost. They are most likely quite expensive because we are quite a small market compared to someone who might purchase say 'National Treasure."
I think the most valuable thing to do a lot of research on the videos and pick the best one so you get the best bang for your buck.
Maybe this is something we could do. I will start a new rate the DVD's and rate the books thread. Since I would like to only carry what you guys think is best anyway.
The first bit of the threads will be you guys need to help me find all the names of DVD's and Books

Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
Sounds like a good idea. People can post their opinions of books, videos and DVDs...
What I would like to suggest, though, is that there is "form" for this. Like a survey/questionnaire that we would fill in.
I want to know the pros and CONS of a particular item and, frankly, in a lot of "reviews" of material no one EVER says anything critical... there HAS to be something that could be better in any offering... whether it is lack of text, or, poor photos, bad lighting, poor camera angles, or, missing details, or some lackluster designs...etc. etc. OR it wasn't what you thought from the advertising...
If there is a set format for the "review" then everyone would answer the same questions about every item reviewed - would give us all a comparision that could be judged based on our needs.

Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
Funny, I just added Jinny's videos to the ratings thread, and then saw this. Jinny's DVD (vol 2) was the first DVD I ever saw for face painting, and it helped me learn to double-load a sponge. MOST things you can learn through pictures and instructions, but seeing that particular thing done was helpful for me as a newbie.
I thought her voice was soothing and calm. I liked that she showed how to load a sponge and brush properly and activate paints, but "sped up" some of the more monotonous stuff. (I love Mark's videos, but I have to fast forward through half of it where nothing is really happening.) I liked how it was basic enough for a beginner, but had some more complex designs in it for intermediate painters to learn from.
Anyway, it's a hefty chunk of change for a DVD, and hers are more than many, but if you don't know how to sponge a base or double load a brush or sponge, I think it's worth the price just to learn those critical techniques.

Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
What do you mean by double load? Are we talking 2 colors or twice as much paint? I think I may already know how to do it, but I've never called it that.
Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
Excellent idea. Pros/cons is good- not everyone is looking for the same thing in instructional material.
Re: Jinny Makeup Artiste Videos
I love Jinny's DVD, vol. 1..and was contemplating vol. 2..now Angie you have convinced me..I am going to purchase the DVD...
