Loading your brush for one-stroke painting

I'm thinking I'll be able to do some videos on basic strokes this week. I've been promising myself. I wanting to do a video with Emma too...hopefully. She's on Spring Break.

Basically, one-stroke is like calligraphy. Once you learn the strokes you just put them together to make stuff. A dolphin is bump, flow, flow, leaf, leaf. thorn, thorn, thorn.

There are a few Youtube videos out there. Ambah has a good leaf one but there aren't many basic ones.

Thanks Denise for the tutorial... I just got my first cakes and they are tag.. Do you use a 1/2 in or 3/4 brush?

She had at least a 3/4 in the video but it could have been a 1" now that I think about it.

3/4" in the video but you would use a 1/2' for edging butterflies, little leaves, or I like using a 1/2" filbert for little roses. Basically each stripe in a cake is about 1/4" so it depends on how many colors you want to pick up. I should probably get a 1" for rainbow cakes so I can get all the colors. I think it was Shawna D that suggested a 1" foam brush for rainbows.

Thanks Denise, your tutorial was great. I think I spent about 1/2 hr trying to do the flowers. Not an ez task. They just seemed so big and I loved the way you didnt move the inside center of your brush...

Thanks Denise! I have a lot of the one stroke cakes but mainly use the big ones with sponges because I always 'muddy' the little ones. Your tutorial was great!

I'd like to get better at the one stroke technique. Now I'll be more interested in practicing

Question: Do you have a brush for each arty cake or do you clean the brush after each one? I only have 2 brushes that are flat like that and wonder if when I get more arty cakes is it worth the investment to get one for each arty cake? --Is that question clear?

Seems like you would end up using less paint if you just had one for each color

I have about 4 3/4" angle shaders and just bought a couple more 5/8" angled shaders because I like the smaller size for making shaped things like dolphins, dragons and sharks on little faces. So, if a design is popular I'll leave it loaded (like I'll have one rainbow) but they usually get cleaned inbetween clients. I usually have to dip it all the way because it's dried out anyway. I still have a couple of 1/2" flats for my spiderman eyes that I usually have ready to go with black.

I moved into the angled shaders because they seem to pick up more colors and they are easier to control when you do flicks and feathery strokes on feminine designs.

And I can't get the angled ones to work. I'm really struggling with leaves and eye lillies. I can make the eye lilies work, but then they end up taking up the WHOLE side of the face....not my intent.

Angela, try a lot smaller brush like a 1/2" or a 5/8" on eye designs and don't "travel" too much...in other words...start turning your brush right away to a point.

Do some stuff on waxed paper and PM me or email me and I'll see what's going on. Make a simple petal flower (like Emma's Frangapani video) and then an eye design so I can see both kinds.

Thanks Denise, I'll work on this today once we get done running the one hundred year old maple tree through the wood chipper.

That makes me sad. I see a lot of trees dying this summer. A lot are actually from construction sites not watering while they've got the water turned off...really? Can't you just run a hose out that way?
