Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
I painted my kids for St.Patty's some neighborhood kids and my Neice and Nephew, My sister called me the next day to ask if it was normal to have a reaction to the paint because my little neice had a red and bumpy rash, exactly where the paint was... Then upon closer inspection, I am now noticing my 7 year old has a rash where her paint was too. I used Tag paint on both girls one with a rainbow cake and the other in light green? Both kids washed it off that night in the tub. What is up with that? Anyone else have this happen? As far as I know none of the other kids have had any reaction, or myself...

Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
If it were me, I'd photograph the rash, send it to TAG and ask, then take those two paints out of circulation - perhaps also they got contaminated with something at a job? Also I'd be curious and almost getting a professional opinion as to whether the rash was Dermatitis or something contagious, cause it sounds weird for 2 kids to get dermatitis especially as I'm guessing you've painted your daughter before without a reaction. Also was there anything on the brushes from the last clean? Soap, alcohol etc. Definitely worth investigating as it was two kids that reacted rather than just one... good luck

Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
I paint between 20 and 100 kids a night, three or four days a week and haven't had a problem with the TAG, DFX or Paradise paints I've used *crosses fingers* but I do inform parents ahead of time that if their child had particularly sensitive skin they may want to take that into consideration before getting painted, kinda like a CYA. I do use Paradise greens of all shades, light and dark TAG greens and DFX green in split cakes and they seem to work fine, and I painted at least 80 kids for St. Patrick's Day.
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
And- do you paint with "one sponge one time per child." and "Once a brush or sponge touches a face it never touches the paint again."
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
if it is in the same family, they might have a similar allergy to one of the ingredients. I had that kind of reaction to getting painted with DFX and Wolfe.
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
Did you wash it off your daughter or let her wash it off?
I ask because if I told my 6 yr old to wash it off she would scrub at it with a washer - because she can't see what she is doing...
really strange.
Dean - really - if I stuck to those rules I would give up painting. Do you do this?
Crimson Dreams - there is no way you would know if any of the 100 people you a painted on St Patricks day had a reaction.... most people that have a reaction to something just stop using it. If I buy a makeup and get a break out I just stop using it I don't notify anyone.

Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
I'm just saying that it might have been a fluke. Most of my customers were there for four or more hours. I would think it strange that they didnt react to the paint earlier than that. And many were back the next day for spring break festivities. I should say the same thing for the original plst. Most topical allergic reactions take hold very quickly. That's one reason that doctors still perform scratch tests to look for allergies.
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
The other question is how was it cleaned off? My girl and myself get reactions to Huggies baby wipes but not to the Johnson brand. After I use baby wipes i will always then wipe with a wet face washer.
I have skin that is very sensitive to some cosmetics, but face paint doesnt worry me. Tag makes up 3/4 of my kit

Beeja makes a really good point. Wipes with alcohol irritate my skin to no end. Maybe the cleansers had sOmething to do with the reactions? Just throwin out suggestions.
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
Hi Tash.... yes I do.
Not saying you have to, in some places that is the law... here I simply do because I "grew up" as a theatrical makeup artist, and that is how you keep from cross contaminating makeup throughout a large cast of a show.
But, if child A had something transmittable, or even a sun block that child B was allergic to, it could account for a reaction is all.

Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
skin reactions can take a couple of hours of wear before it shows, it depends on how severe their reaction is. And most kids DO wear their face painting for a couple of hours at least so they can get their money's worth out of it.
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
If I ever encounter this (I haven't so far), I would always be very sensitive to the issue. I would ask the parent for a bit more detail. How was the paint removed? Did the child sleep w/ it on? Was the child wearing sun screen. If it's really the paints I'd ask to get a picture of the rash & send it to the manufacturer.
The 2 things I've seen the most reactions from are baby wipe removal of face paints, over excessive scrubbing or sunscreen, lotion, etc mixed w/ the face paints. Also, if the kit isn't kept very clean, pink eye can occur.
I've had parents w/ sensitive skin children ask if my paints are safe. I tell them they are, but like any product I can't guarantee no reaction. We can patch test if they want. Maybe pick an arm design.
There is no product that is reaction free & some people do react to our products.
It took me forever to find a face cleanser that didn't cause me to rash & when I told a Mary Kay lady I couldn't use her product, she accused me of making it up. This is the worse thing to do, blow off the client. I'd recommend taking it seriously.

Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
I had a severe reaction to Mary Kay foundation too. The Lady said she never saw or heard of it happening before. I was her model and in 10 minutes my whole face was burning and when I washed it all off I looked and felt like I had had a severe sunburn. Skin even peeled a couple days later. So my skin is very sensitive and I haven't had a reaction to TAG yet. If I leave ben nye powders on over night they make my eyes itchy.
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
Dean - do you mind if I ask you how in the bleep you do your line work?
Based on your description you paint say a black line or two if you have really loaded up.. and then you get a new brush?
By my calculations I would need at least 8 brushes just to pain a butterfly.... a tiger would put me in the range of thirty brushes.
I'm scratching my head literally trying to work out how you actually do this....
I don't have a problem with one sponge per kid... except where the rainbow cake is used as this will kill my cake just loading it up.. have to reuse that one. But this part - "Once a brush or sponge touches a face it never touches the paint again."
Would you consider doing a video just to show us/me how you actually pull this off?
I could see one brush per kid... maybe.... but when I do a festival and paint 80-100 faces in a day... how is that going to work.
You really have me curious now.

Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
Tash, it can be done.
I have to work that way too... you figure out how to get the brush loaded to do what you want to do (which is why I like kolinsky sables - the hold a lot of paint.) And... I also use liquid Fardel black on a palette (a yoghurt lid), that I squeeze out if I need to reload... lid is wiped down between people.
It is just following the same procedures that we HAVE to follow as make-up artists - it really is not that big a deal.

Thanks Shannon it would make sense that you would have to use a liquid and not cake paints... still though I would like to see this method in action... do you have 200 brushes for public events?
Re: Rash from Tag paint showed up on two kids???
she has a lot of them to be sure and sanitizes them on the job.
