just wanting to share my $6 find!!
Hey Girls and Guys,
Just wanted to share that i know a few of you use the Car washing sponges -
I found a 6 pack of the car Sponges for $6 from a cheap shop (crazy clarks) in Bundaberg. have since cut up 2 of them and they work great and can be used for stippling also they have great full coverage and soft for the skin but its also "textured" in a way that i have found makes for great 5 oclock beard stubble and fur etc.
Hope this can help if anyone is looking for good sponges cheap. (i have to add that i am also in Queensland Australia)

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
Yeah, I've been cutting up those peanut sponges for a while to get face painting sponges. I've got it to where I can get a dozen half circle sponges out of just one large peanut sponge that is used for washing cars. They come in lots of colors too, so I can color code my sponges so they don't look as stained when they've been washed.
It takes some time and patience to do a good job of cutting them up, but it's well worth the savings!
Seriously, you can get a peanut sponge for $1 not on sale and get 12 sponges out of it. At the same time you can get a premade yellow tack sponge for like $1 on sale and only get 2 sponges out of it when you cut it in half.
In an average day of ppf painting, I go through about 50 - 60 sponges. With using the cut up peanut sponges that is about $5. But using the pre-made yellow tack sponges, that is about $25-$30. When you're a recent college graduate who's still unemployed and barely making it by, those savings are well worth the time spent cutting up those sponges!

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
yep, ive found using a bread knife gives a great clean cut and i have worked out i can get up to 16 pieces out of it too - i tend to cut a few small ones to keep handy for toddlers and for itty bitty jobs - works a treat

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
Also, check out The Original Horse Company, online. Look up Tack Sponges. They are the right size, perfect, and cheeeeeeeeep. no cutting (except in half) 5 bucks for a dozen...I have had mine for almost a year.
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
I have been thinking on using car wash sponges since I can't drop $20 on sponges like that. Can you guys post pics of the car wash sponges that you buy. I've seen a huge yellow car wash sponge in kmart for only $1 I think I can get at least 10 pieces out of it. I'm hoping it's similar to what any of you guys have.

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
It's great as a 1 sponge per child painter, waaay more cost effective!
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
Thank you guys sooo much! I'm so happy I can go ahead and use that sponge. Now I have to keep a straight face when the cashier is giving me weird looks when I buy 10 sponges at a time. lol

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
I never would have thought to buy car wash sponges! Will have to try!
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
That sounds like a great idea that I never thought of. I like the tip about buying different colors as I don't like people seeing the stained beige sponges either. Great tip! Question though, do most painters use a different sponge for each child? Is that recommended?
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
I prefer to have clean sponges for each child, for me it just seems "cleaner" and more positive to see someone using a "clean" product on my children - and i know other parents are the same. I guess a lot of it comes from the "just in case that kid might have something" thing we are all ingrained with.

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
Will you guys post a pic of the kind you got? When I searched I found a lot of different kinds
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
I got some of those from walmart. Mine was purple and 1.50 but I didnt like it at all. It was very very dense and firm and a little rough. Mabey I just got a bad one
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
I find cutting sponges really tricky, they end up all wonky on me.
On the topic of tack sponges, has anyone tried these (I'm liking the bright colours, but they look pretty open textured - not sure I'f they'd be good for FP or not): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rainbow-Assorted-12-pack-tack-cleaing-sponges-/280711820183

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
that's the shipping to Australia. It's a California company selling through Amazon.
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!

Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
Which is 4.45 in handling because you know it will come in one of those $5 envelops.
Re: just wanting to share my $6 find!!
^ yeah, I saw the shipping after I posted the link - would definitely hunt them down from somewhere else rather than pay THAT amount for shipping!!
