Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
I'm just getting started. I may have a gig at a baseball tourney in the next couple of weeks. Just wondering if the weather is hot - is there something that you can do to help prevent the designs from smudging in the heat? Should I be concerned about that happening? Going to be using Snazaroo paints.
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
In all honesty... I don't worry about it. The customer chooses to get painted, and once they are out of my chair my part is done.
Birthday parties are the worst... paint all the kids, they get cake - total messes!
Around here if it is really hot I switch to glitter tattoos ... saves the on the frustration all around.
It is a temporary art after all!

Pick the coolest place you can so you and your paints don't melt!!! Paint, have fun, and take the pics fast!!!!
Shimmer powders and starblends are options for quick hi impact designs that stand up to the heat and humidity better. There are some youtubes from silly heatherb on some shimmer powder designs.

Good luck and stay cool!!!! I do like the glitter and mica tattoos too- helped save a few summer gigs here in FL!!!

Yea, I did a girls birthday party and they looked so cute and precious, with their lips all painted and glossed up...then they went and ate pizza!
ICK! It was smeared up onto the cheeks (the pizza sauce) and into the cheek art they had me doing....
Hehe...but they were adorable while it lasted!

See the thread I started about Humidity in the "How Did You Do That" section. May help.
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
I get out before the pizza and in hot weather I blot the moisture from their skin and bolt when the last kid is done...otherwize the touch ups start and it's more difficult to get out.
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
If you're working on adults and older children, I've had great success using the Mehron fixer spray on top of the design (and under the design if the person is prone to perspire excessively).
I haven't tried it on younger children, though - I'd be afraid that they'd open their eyes or try and breathe it in, or... Well, you get the idea.
I've used it on both Snaz and Paradise and it's worked fine.

A good body paint to use in hot weather is liquid latex. It stays on and doesn't smudge or rub off.
There are a few guidelines you should follow before applying this body paint to your skin. See http://www.liquidflesh.com

I don't know that parents would appreciate it though.. and then you have to worry about people like me who are allergic to latex (and didn't find out until I had the reaction to it...)
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
Sorry to hear that. As far as I'm aware latex intolerance is quite rare but can be quite nasty. I'd be interested to know why you think parents wouldn't appreciate latex body paint. Do you consider it to be 'adult' related or were you thinking more about kids getting on their clothes etc?
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
I would NOT use latex on children. Geesh... that's a risk that I am not interested in. WHY would anyone even think that putting latex on a child's FACE would be okay? Liquid latex contains AMMONIA.
Yes, I use liquid latex... for SFX work, and on adults who have signed a waiver. But, putting it on a kid's face is ridiculous... it would stick in their hair, eyebrows, lashes, their hair would fall and stick to it.. unless you powdered it down properly which adds another step to the process.
The tools needed cannot be cleaned and reused. Latex will dry up in the container quickly when exposed to the air...
We are talking FACE PAINTING here... on children, usually painting 10-20 per hour... that is not a venue for liquid latex.
Liquid latex is a great thing... in the right situation, and I have to say that FACE PAINTING is NOT it.

I live in Virginia where it is UBER HUMID! like 100% most of the summer! So I have learned to bring along another pallette with me on gigs.. It's made of powders.. the powders really help the design to stay in place... You can put the powder right on top of the paint using a smoothie blender or a brush, or your finger, OR you can also make the whole design out of powders and then just outline in paint.
I like ben nye, starblend, and the mica powders from Amerikan Body Art....

Why do I get the feeling that John is plugging his site (liquid latex)? Metina?
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
When a kid plops down and in my seat and is all sweaty I'll just give them a quick wipe with a wipey and power them with my Starblend Tan Glow, then paint. Its worked pretty good for me.
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
My husband and I have both worked in the healthcare field. I wondered, so I googled. Latex Allergy Prevalence... have some cut-n-paste
Type I is the least common. It is an immediate reaction response similar to the severe reaction a person can have to a bee sting (symptoms can include flushing, itching, swelling, nausea, vomiting and nasal congestion*). This life threatening type of reaction may affect the person wearing latex gloves or the person being examined.
Type IV is the second and most common type. It is a delayed reaction at a cellular level. It is usually a response to the chemicals used in the manufacturing process. This reaction is similar to that of poison oak or poison ivy (symptoms can include debilitating rashes, itching and cracking of the hands or body parts in contact with the rubber*).
In studies using solid-phase technologies, the prevalence of latex allergy was found to be 34 to 39%.
*That is what parents wouldn't appreciate.

Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
Thank you Jennifer! I am certainly a Type IV...I start itching and then come the beautiful hives.
That anyone would paint a child with latex not knowing for certain that that child couldn't have an immediate and fatal reaction to it... boggles the mind.
I forgot to thank you as well Shannon...once again you pounded some sense into a discussion better than we could.

Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
Yeah, "pound" I like that stomp stomp
A 34-39% reaction rate is really high therefore the risk of causing a reaction in someone is MORE THAN 1 OUT OF EVERY 3 PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
... and latex is one of those "allergies" that you can develop too... you may not have had a problem in the past but one day you have contact and pow

Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
I know that one first hand! I first discovered my new allergy after my yearly gyno exam... it was an experience I'll never forget....and I'll leave it at that lest I etch it on your poor brain as well.
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
OUCH!!! I'm glad i only found out by wearing latex based eye-lash glue...It wasn't pretty the next day, as my eyes were almost swollen shut. Red itchy skin, and puffy eyes. Needless to say, I don't use that kind of glue on my clown eyelashes anymore....
Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
Someone here locally DIED a few months ago due to a latex allergy. It was really shocking and terrible. I think latex allergies are becoming more common as we become more and more exposed to it.
For heat, I always tell the kids/parents to BLOT their faces with a paper towel, and not to rub, and it will help with sweat and keep the paint looking nice longer. I strongly encourage immediate photo shoots if parents have cameras. LOL. I have heard that applying baby powder before painting would help with sweat, but haven't tried it.

Re: Any tricks to help paint stay put on HOT days?
Unfortunately, with baby powder you also run the risk of allergies, asthma, etc. due to the talc... Can't win
