My first Sugar Skulls Empty My first Sugar Skulls

Post by pinkundies Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:40 pm

Hi All,

I am new to face painting, about 2 months, but not art. I've done a few gigs already and have to bribe my kids to let me paint them, and now only good bribes lol!

Here are my very first sugar skulls. They are my twins, both 6 years old, and I did have to hurry because my son was whining and squiriming and complaining when he realized I was doing 'flowers' around his eyes like his twin sister. These are my own designs, and my kids would only give me limited time, so be gentle. Please let me know what would improve my work. Thanks so much@@@

I've been painting for years, and have yet to try a sugar skull. I think these look great and all I would say is to add more and go bigger with the lovely rose!
I know 6 year olds all too well, so I feel ya on being rushed on a face that could care less to be painted. My bribing has gotten out of hand!LOL

You've inspired me to have a go at it. My 10 yr old my let me Very Happy

The rose looks great! I have so much trouble with one stroke roses! Your skulls look adorable - I can't belive you got the yellow flowers on your boy! He looks too cute. One thing to maybe try on the spiderwebs for next time, try to get all the "u" shapes between the lines to go the same way. Does that make sense? It might give it a more delicate look Smile

I really like the white you used. It looks very soft.

Why is that, Tara?

Very nice first goes! If I may make a suggestion? Many sugar skulls have swirlies that look like mustaches and perhaps on your boy design that would work very well to differentiating it even more and making it more masculine for them. Smile

Our sugar skull designs are some of our most popular, so it's a great thing to do!!

Thanks Lynnie, im a Lynne but my close friends call me Lynnie. I thought about the moustache swirls but he really didnt give me time. Like he was having surgery sans anesthesia or something. Maybe my 8 yr old will let me.

Tara, they are actually quicker and easier than they look. I plan to put some on my boards. Used starblend white for background.

I'm Lynne, too. It's the proper female Gaelic spelling so when ever anyone leaves off the "e" I cringe. lol Silly, I know, but true. We pronounce the "e", well, those who know me, but it's easier to get that point across when writing it with an "ie". I've always been called Lynnie by those close to me, but then I answer to Lynne, Mom, Hun, Hey you,... Wink

I would also use a small stencil sponge, everyone calls them dotter sponges..it makes the petels around the eyes more uniform then eaiser to out line...

Thanks so much for posting these! They look great. I have been working on them too, for a Latino Festival in two weeks, and to just add to my board. I love the look with starblends, and I love how you used what looks like blush. Much easier than what I have been trying to do, and I bet it is tons faster. I have yet to try it on one of my kids yet.

I did my first, and ONLY, sugar skull at Halloween... didn't get a photo. Was one of my appointments... she was happy, it was okay.

I find that type of design a bit frustrating... I can do skulls, I can do pretty (sort of) but combining them is hard!! This would be an example of something I would copy a couple of times myself to get comfortable with before ever offering them as a design!!!

Kudos to those of you who do them!
