Nothing like jumping in head first and a RED paint ? Empty Nothing like jumping in head first and a RED paint ?

Post by ParTIA Mon Aug 01, 2011 2:01 pm

Happy Monday everyone!

So, I pretty much dove head first into my face painting business... no better way, right?
I have a booked the opening of our new elementary school for this Saturday. There is estimated to be 500 kids there, so to keep it simple and manageable I have said I would offer only 3 designs: Butterfly (half) a Pirate and a Red Hawk- The mascot is a Red Hawk. I am also going to quickly train my brother (the tattoo artist and a cousin who has some artistic talent) how to do these 3 designs, because I can only make as much money as I can paint, right!?!

But I could use some suggestions! I need to buy red and I want one that won't stain their skin as much, since this will be my first impression for all these families, I would prefer not to stain them all! I get to pass out my fliers, so I am hoping this will be a huge marketing opportunity!

What is the best Red that doesn't stain? I will probably be driving around like a crazy woman, because I don't know if I order it, if it will be on time? Also, does anyone have a hawk design they'd like to share for inspiration- I have worked up a couple, but I am at work and don't have my pics here. I will try to post later for some input and critiques.

Hope everyone is well and having a good start to the week. From Facebook it looked like everyone had busy weekends with lots of beautiful painting!

Metina has the fastest shipping in the world. It almost teleports itself to its final destination. =0)

I vote for SNAZ bright red, I think it has great coverage and comes off easily without staining. Its why I love it. Ill see if I can come up with a red hawk design tonight.

The school should have an image of their mascot somewhere. Perhaps call someone there and ask to see it. Then make your design from that.

I'm not a snaz fan, but the red is indeed my go to colour for full red faces. When I need a more grown up red, I use Wolfe...I have never had a complaint about staining.

I like red Starblends. It's powder and goes on the squirmy boys so much easier.

Wolfe has a pretty red, but I think it does stain my skin some. Red stained skin is so much nicer looking then blue or green stained skin! Laughing

I can't remember if Paradise has a good red, but that brand washes off the easiest for me Smile

Paradise does have a good red--beach berry red that removes easily. I save it for little spidey guys 'cause it comes off easier than Wolfe. It also stays red red, and works good for bloody stuff you want RED or a good mixer for brown/purple reds for bloodiness...

You may be jumping in head first, but it sound like you are being smart with the three designs.

No opinion on the red since my only red is Wolfe. But I have done an eagle/hawk that used the child's eye as the birds eye, and is just the head with a hooked beak. It not on my iPad, so I'll try to post it later when I'm at the regular computer.

Yeah, good idea to limit the designs, and enlist a helper! So is the school paying you hourly or is each kid paying per design?

I only use Kryolan and I sell it too on my website so I guess I'm partial! But, I've never really had issues with my red staining. Only really the yellow based colors seem to be more stubborn for Kryolan. I could ship up to 3 of the large cakes in a flat rate box for $5 which would arrive in 2-3 business days. (if you ordered tonight it would ship Tues AM and should arrive by Fri)

Good Luck with your first event! Sounds like you have a good plan already!

For me personally I love the Snazaroo red, and I have never had issues with staining. I usually only use it for bases though, I have never used a red for line work.

Down here we can pick up Snazaroo from a couple of crafft stores.

I like Snaz red too, does the trick for me for spiderman, and no staining. Metina is a lightning fast shipper! My last order came in only three days.

I picked up both red and white star cakes for spider man, the white works great for me, but the red is fuzzy, what am I doing wrong? how do the rest of you use starcakes? Maybe I should put that in another post?

Hi All, Thanks so much for the suggestions, I think I may try and get an order in tonight.... eeek!

Here is what I came up for the Red hawk- let me know what you think. I can do these in about 3 min. I need to be able to fly through them, but still want them to be good enought that they might want to hire me for thier gig. Remember up to 500 kids, I want to paint as many as I can. I get ppf, then a portion I give back to the PTO- they sell tickets first and I then turn my tickets in and get the $. Also, need my novice helper to be able to do them.... hahaha, who am I a kidding, I am a novice too Smile

Anyway, here are some pics... the logo of the school is real basic, red and black- full body hawk. Nothing like jumping in head first and a RED paint ? 100_2110[/urlNothing like jumping in head first and a RED paint ? 100_2111[/urlNothing like jumping in head first and a RED paint ? 100_2210[/url

So, Are these okay? do you prefer the rounded head hawk or the flared feather hawk? Are the white accecents with the extra minute they take to put in? Other suggestions welcome!

PS. how can I make just my pics show up without the crazy codes showing?
Thanks Smile

What about enlarging it a bit, and using the WHOLE nose for the beak?

Question: why a pirate? I like the idea of a hawk or a butterfly (half and same color scheme). i was thinking a football helmet in red- they are easy but Im not sure what elementary kids are into. Youll be seeing red forever but itll get the job done. they look great! good luck!!

is she makes the nose bigger the beak will be to big IMO. more like a rooster. Hawks have tiny beaks and they look great right now again, IMO

My first designs used the whole nose and it just didn't quite work... the problem I keep having is I think they look like a parrot. but Hawk have small curved beaks.Nothing like jumping in head first and a RED paint ? 100_2112[/url

This was my very first attempt- so not great, but I really couldnt' get the beak to work over the whole nose. Plus I thought black beak made it look less cardnial"ish"

Again, I really appreciate everyones help and input

Why the Pirate> They wanted one boy design, one girl and then the mascot... I figured Pirate was fast and might work for the youngest - oldest elem age boys. Spidey or batman is too young for some of the older boys. I honestly think I will mostly do the hawks, which is why I am focusing on them. I agree with you about the tiny hawk beak Very Happy

How about a dragon? the tribal dragon works for any boy's ages, the youngest will love it red, green or blue and the oldest will love it in black, (yesterday it was a post about somebody's first tribal dragon) it is quick, easy and makes an impact, and the good thing about it is you can change the color too.

I like the clean lines of the first one.

I find red doesnt usually stain its mroe of the blue and green of any brand. I use snazaroo red I also have the berry red from mehron. Both are great but mehron has a scent which concerns me on sensitive skin so i lean towards snazaroo red then.

I think pirate might be a longer one then a half skull or superhero mask wouldnt it? I guess it depends on what your speed is like and what u are most comfortable with. But i would give a spiderman head band option just the eyes and up personally because the younger boys will love it and the older ones will be too cool to get face paint usually.

Just an idea... good luck with your big beginning!!
