I did this one at a Ball I worked at a few weeks ago. I love the photo. My art on these masks is getting better too Smile)

I think its a lovely mask. Are the jewls cut into a specific shape or did you apply each one individually?

Marcela Masks for Face Painters Empty Jewels for Face Painting

Post by LillyW Sat Mar 26, 2011 4:07 pm

Thank you! I think the photographer really captured a good moment.

The jewels are in "clusters." They are used for scrapebooking. I find them on sale at Michaels, and such, then cut them into the right size. They are way too big to use on the face.

THAT takes forever. I do it in front of the TV until 3 in morning -- and just love doing it!

I put all the clusters together into little bags, one for each face design. THEN, I put all the like colors onto rings, one ring for each color.

Also, I put a skin safe adhesive on the jewels (or on the right spot on the face), at the gig.

I will be talking about this at FABAIC, plus, using them at jams there Smile Come find me, I will show you. Also, I have class on it in SoCal next week, April 6.

I love the close up of the pic Lilly! She really was captured at a great moment & the mask is stunning. I'm still fiddling with the gems, but it's not so easy to do on kids.
Buying gems can become addictive... I keep stopping in Michael's & Joann's just in case... Very Happy

Marcela Masks for Face Painters Empty Fairy Princess Party Face Painting with Jewels

Post by LillyW Sun Mar 27, 2011 1:21 am

Psalmbook wrote: I'm still fiddling with the gems, but it's not so easy to do on kids.

I just did this Fairy Princes Party today. Forgot my camera, but I got a few of them with my cell phone. Sorry, the resolution is pretty low. Thhe said they would email me a good copy. Note that even the butterfly fairies had the bling. It is so fast and easy doing the jewels that say.

This party was SOOooooo much fun! I really had a good time. Just the very reason I got into face painting. Look at all those beatuiful Fairies! The Moms were all great, the kids sweet. Just a great day.

Oh I missunderstood... So you buy the jewels that come in pre-sticky backed designs and just cut up parts of the designs? So if it has a big flourish you cut it into smaller sections, but still with the flourish shape, right? Thats fantastic, I can't wait to try it!

Exactly right! I print out a practice sheet, full size color face. I lay out all of the jewels I have collected in a certain color - lets say greens. Then, I pull out what might make a nice center piece, the two side pieces, and the eye accents.

I OFTEN use big huge pieces, and cut out just a tiny bit (like on the photos in this thread), that will make both side of a crown, or the top of the mask.

I do use a "safe for the skin" adhesive.

Here is a photo of a butterfly I used one of my Bling Bags on. There are 5 pieces, "clusters" in it. I let it big so you might be able to see the individual pieces better.

Hope all that helps!

You can also purchase small rhinestones that have an adhesive backing on them. They come in bags of 100 in different sizes. I got ours from JoAnne's. We use those in our body paint designs. I use a birthday candle to pick up the really small ones and place them on the glue.

Thank you for sharing, Lilly.

Aside from the gems, what do you find challenging about the masks and what are you doing to overcome that? (I'm a HUGE mask fan ;-) )

So what adhesive do you use?I have tried the mehron but it tends to ooze out too much and I think it is a little expensive.

Also...what silver did you use? It showed up great on camera. Very, very nice work!
