March Splitcake Challenge

Since we had so much fun with the flower challenge & after hearing a request I decided to practice with split cakes/arty cakes/rainbow cakes... you get the idea. The designs all need to use these cakes in some way. Please list the cakes you use(if it's home made, that's ok).

Day 1: I used for the base a Peacock Arty Cake, & DFX white & black:

Anyway, I have only just come across this thread and the funny thing is today my first ever artycakes arrived in the post... here is what I came up with this afternoon...

Mermaid Splitcake.


And I have completely forgotten the names of these ones.. will update when I track them down...

What a great way to start the month! And great designs to start the challenge! I have to admit, I struggle with the rainbows. I have them, I love the way they look all lined up in my kit, And I love when I see designs with them. But for some reason I just can't seem to make them work as a part of my regular painting. This challenge is exactly what I need. Thanks for thinking of it!!!

Linda, why do you keep picking things I'm terrible at? You know from experience that me and split cakes do not get along. Are you out to get me? Lol! No I'm glad. You are challenging me to be better.

I love artycakes...

I have a photography studio, and I noticed too that Daizy has great lighting. SO, you either have an incredible natural light window and are using a reflector or you have studio lighting and a dark background...can't tell from their catchlights in their eyes. Nice photos though.

My pictures always turn out terrible. They never look like they actually look on the person. Of course my camera is so old, it is a 1.3 mega pixel so, that is a BIG part of the problem.

Lighting is definitely the key!
I have a black cloth I just tuck into my bedroom dresser which is right to the doors outside. I also make sure I take them at the right time of the day where there isn't too much streaming in... (Or yesterday we had the paddling pool drying outside the doors so that blocked the 4pm sun we get in there )

Lovely designs Daizy how exciting for you to have just received your split cakes & taaa daaa a split cake challenge on the forum.

I am quite liking this wee challenge... I have struggled with split cake designs and brought some arty cakes hoping it will inspire me to work on them.

Here are a couple I did this morning.. nothing fancy just trying to get some basic faces practiced.

Terina I have a Nikon D40.. a fairly basic DSLR.
Mandi, I am pretty sure it is Mermaid.... my new favourite! I was thinking the other day it would be perfect for peacocks too.

I'm glad your all going to enjoy the challenge. I also have a whole bunch of artycakes in my kit that I only use for flowers, butterflies, snakes & dragons. I never play with them & I know you can do all sorts of cool stuff with them. I want to do more with them. I also want to learn how to use them well. They are hit or miss with me.

Daisy, I have the same camera as you. I agree it is all in the lighting. I take my best pictures outside b/c the lighing is terrible in my house.
I love the 2nd picture that you did. It is very delicate and pretty.
