Facing a move
The time is quickly coming upon us and I wanted to pick the collective brains of FPF.
The area we are heading to, San Antonio, has a ton of face painters, so I am not sure if it would be best to set up my own shop as well or contact face painters already established and see if they need any additional painters. We likely will only be stationed there for three years or so.
I guess I have a few months to figure it all out.
If anyone has advice, I would be happy to hear it.
Or if anyone is a painter in that area, I would love to hear from you. PM or email at elizabeth@aboutfacepartyworks.com.
I have an outlined plan on paper for closing things up here in KY, but haven't gotten past that as far as looking up Texas business regulations and such. Ugh!
Thankful for my husbands career, but seriously hate picking up and leaving every few years.

Re: Facing a move
I just did the same thing and contacting MWR when I arrived was extremely helpful. They offered me gigs to help get my name out there.
Re: Facing a move
I can't imagine moving so often... my heart goes out to you! Seems like just as you are becoming established, it would be time to move on. But hey, at least you get to see lots of amazing places! San Antonio is beautiful!
Re: Facing a move
My husband's retired Navy, so we did a lot of moving. I feel for you. See if there's a Jam in your area. Maybe you can network with some of the other painters. I'm not sure how to re-establish the business(especially if you have to keep re-doing it every few years).
Re: Facing a move
wmeventservices, it's whitney right? Don't want to address by the wrong name....
Anyways, did you move TOO Bliss or move FROM Bliss?
Was MWR receptive to you? I have had a hard time getting anyone here to pay attention to me. It really is only as we are leaving that anyone on post is interested, and that is only because someone high up saw me at a birthday party!

Re: Facing a move
I would probably start out taking overflow from established painters, but that's because it's how I started out here and if there's a lot of them already, it would probably be easier than just striking out on your own from the get go. Look at their work, find someone that does really nice stuff and let them know a lot about the work that you have already done. I'm sure when they see some samples of what you can do, they'll be happy to call you when they need some help.
Re: Facing a move
Yeah Liz it is Whitney. I just moved to Bliss and they were fairly receptive from the get go, but only because my main concern was to find out where I was allowed to advertise and how. After advertisement, I met another at home business owner and she made me aware of the housing authority on base. They are always throwing community events and need volunteers. You and I both know that when someone does something on base, news travels like wild fire so all you really have to do is a couple events for them and you should be an your way to really making a name for yourself. I have had a lot of interest in the belly and body paintings here, but it is too high of a cost for most. I'm trying to rework things to make it more affordable.
Re: Facing a move
Wow...that is tuff. Good luck on your move. I am sure with your talent that your business will pick back up in no time. I agree with Perry to attempt to contact some people, I would start with them and all party people in the area.
Re: Facing a move
That's a hard one. I'm considering a move south, but I have family there that I could use to get myself out there. Is it possible for you to start connecting now, maybe via e-mail or soemthing?
