Pouncer Inspired Empty Pouncer Inspired

Post by pixieface Sat Nov 13, 2010 10:08 pm

I just picked up some pouncers (those round sponges with sticks) at Michaels yesterday and am just in LOVE with them. On a thread here I know someone had some kissing goldfish. Inspired by my memory of that (can't find the thread now - so if anyone knows it and can provide the link that would be awesome...) I did the following tonight during the chat. Whoever did those kissing goldfish thanks :-)

Used Snaz sparkle orange, DFX orange and gold from the tiger lily cake, then Snaz blue and white. Does anyone else have pouncer inspired designs they do? I'd adore seeing them!

Pixie, that's great! Did you paint that while we were chatting? I'm gonna borrow it from you if that's ok?

Borrow, steal, make your fortune on it (LOL) - I'm very flattered you like it. But as I said - I saw something here in the forum I was "copying" off, at least in my head. Oh - and I look forward to seeing your take on it. I am always in awe of the designs you post and study them a lot to pick up on techniques and to get inspiration.

We should have a contest for designs using those round sponges. I'd love to have a whole board full of pouncer designs. Great goldfish!

I love your little fishy! I use those dotter sponges all the time but never thought of doing a fish with one! If I can ever figure out how to upload a pic I'll show you a pic of my fave round sponge face!

A pouncer or mop is a round sponge on a stick. You find them in craft stores. They're great for balls, peace symbols & smileys.

Thank you for the complement Pixie, but you'd be surprised... my cheek art is not the best(or maybe it's my eyesight on the small details... Very Happy ).

I'll see if I can give it a go after church. I like the pouncer inspired thread.

Yay! Makin Faces - doh, use the rainbow in the fish! I was trying to use my butterfly cut fan brush to make rainbow tails and fins but dead-ended with that idea. I am going to try that today. Your little girl is so cute!

Vampkat - http://www.acmoore.com/p-110793-sponge-pouncers-1-7pkg-.aspx - note they also call the round flat brushes pouncers as well - and there is a brush also called a mop - does anyone use those brushes rather than sponges?

Gina - no! I hadn't seen that! The ones I saw looked more like Makin Faces - they were on an arm or a cheek. But wow, what a great design. The eyes really make it. I haven't tried anything where the mouth is incorporated from the profile like that...ah yes, the YouTube...and that is even quicker and easier. I am so struggling with how just to make basic shapes without a lot of line strokes.

Ah - now see - Poizonedpeach got the effect I was trying to go for on my dragon on the help with dragons thread. Much more 3-dimensional. Fabulous.

Psalm - okay, let me ask a dumb question - people talk about balls all the time for boys - are you all talking "sports" balls like baseballs, soccer balls? I know this sounds blonde...LOL

I'm sure these are the balls in question. The pouncer/mop is the perfect way to get a perfectly round ball. Choose the color, Add the details, and poof!, you're done! Quickest and easiest - basketball and baseball. The soccerball is a little more detailed and time consuming, but not overly hard.

Thanks! I was so literal I just kept picturing spheres and couldn't figure out why boys would want just an image of a ball. Then someone said with flames and I was thinking comet. Sports - doh! Can you tell I don't have children?

I've seen them used in some tutorials in Silly Farms video corner. They used them more for coverage. I was a little iffy on them because I wasn't sure if I would get much use on them but I guess you can get creative with them. Your fishy did come out really cute.

Maybe this is the fish design you were looking for, Makin' Faces posted it in the "What can you do with a SMALL rainbow cake?" thread. It's pretty much the same one she posted above, only these ones are kissing.

Edited, dang I can't get the picture in my post, hmph. Here's a link to Makin' Faces kissing fishes:

I used them in my necklace design in this months challenge, I call them daubers. Same thing tho.
I think they'd be great for christmas ballbells like in my necklace.

there is a tutorial on you tube about the fish with the sponge and rainbow cakes.. neon one's.. I use the large one to do my butterflies.. fits right into the eye socket and you just move it up past the eye brow and it works really great.. i just squeeze it smaller for below the eye just to the outside corner of the eye

That fish is adorable. Those pouncer sponges are awesome for making peace signs. I rub it across a rainbow split cake and dab onto the cheek. Outline with black and make the peace sign. Glitter and voila.
