Why does everyone do four leaf clovers for St. Patrick's Day? This is such a pet peeve of mine! Shamrocks and clover are totally different! The symbol of three leaves was so important to St. Patrick as he used it to symbolise the trinity.

Because 4-leaf clovers are lucky and relates to "Luck of the Irish".

It really doesn't matter in the end if the 3-leaf was more important to St. Patrick because the holiday as evolved since then (like every other Holiday) and not everyone is religious or exclusively Catholic.

Every holiday evolves over time.

Valentines Day  - Made to honor 'St. Valentine' who married young couples even through the Roman Ruler forbid it (because married men care too much about their families and not about the all important army). Now we buy cards, roses, and chocolate to run the corporate machine lol.

Easter - A Combination of Christian and pagan believes. We have Jesus dying on the cross, and we also have bunnies, chickens, painted eggs, and spring time to symbolize the rebirth and fertility of the Earth. (if you paint eggs at Easter you are totally participating in a pagan ritual lol)

Halloween - Originally a pagan holiday called Samhain. The Catholics attempted to adopt it and thus convert pagans by putting 'All Saints Day' on the day after, which made Oct 31st "The Eve of All Holy's" Then "All Hallows Eve" then finally "Halloween". Pretty much everything about it is pagan except for the trick or treating, which was made by a USA town to stop youth from vandalizing every year by giving them something to do. Razz

Don't get my started on Christmas - pretty much everything about it is Pagan in origin lol.

So there you have it. No everyone follows the original holidays anymore lol. They have all been changed and adapted. Same goes with St. Patrick's day - so it's a pretty silly thing to nit pick and get upset about about when you look at it in contrast. Very Happy

Dear Dottie from County Cork,
My great-great grandfather, Cornelius O'Connell was from County Cork. I paint only shamrocks, not 4-leaf clovers. Of course, most of the places I paint those are St Paddy's Day celebrations w/mostly Irish people. I've been a Lutheran longer than a Catholic, tho... & was recently asked to explain to our choir about St Patrick. Of course, I told them that he used the shamrock to help explain the trinity. Our family has an annual open house on the holiday, complete w/decorations from local stores…all shamrocks. Things will change, that's human nature, but my grandchildren know why Nana has shamrocks growing in our garden!
