Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
I got my Ben Nye Lumiere Palette a few days ago and had an opportunity to try it out yesterday and I'm not really loving it. I don't know if I'm maybe doing it wrong or what. I got two smoothie blender things from Michael's (Loew Cornell) to apply the powders. I've watched a couple of videos...Denise's video on YouTube and Marcela's Mask video on FabaTV and the designs looked neat and the color, while not as vibrant as paint, was still bright enough. When I tried it the color was sheer and splotchy-ish and not nearly as shimmery as I had hoped it'd be. I saw one little girl I had painted a few hours later and it seemed that most of all of the color had fallen off over time .
Am I missing something? If this is what to expect from them I'll probably sell them in the swap shop.

Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
Have you tried it on yourself? I like using it a lot so that I can be painted around town and not feel like I'm flaking or smearing. I started on myself first and I liked it so much better than paint on my eyes then I started using it on gigs. It works really well as a background for Pashur type eyes because it doesn't make the line work bleed.
The only other thing I can think of is you aren't getting enough on your sponge or the girl just had really dry skin.
I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you. That's a bummer.

I am loving mine for eye designs, like Denise, I use mine on myself and it really seems to last. I add a touch of water to my brush and it becomes more opaque if that is what I'm wanting. Here are a couple I sis using Lumiere and some magic cakes Ben Nye. Keep at it, maybe you will start liking them more.
Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
Try it again with a bit of water, as suggested. It goes on more opaque and helps it last longer too, in my experience.
Also, some colours are more shimmery than others.
Keep trying. Experiment. Check the BNL makeup tutorials on YT to see the vibrancy that can be achieved with the palette.
And when all else fails, sell it to me in the shop swap! Lol
I have 6 of the loose powders and love them. I would like to add the palette for speed.
Don't give up. I'm sure you will love it.

Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
I haven't tried it on myself yet...I think I'll do that tomorrow.
So if you use it wet can you use it dry again?
I'll have to play with it more for sure.
Jody I LOVE your eye designs!
Kirsten - If I do decide to sell it I'll PM you first .

Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
Once you start using it wet it doesn't work dry unless you scrape off a layer (same as with Starblends). It is a pressed powder, and once you wet it, it changes it.
This was done with Ben Nye Lumiere powders, wet if I remember right, by Val Daft.

Mine are (BNL) loose powders, so I just toss a bit into the lid to use (wet or dry).
I would go with what Shannon said about using pressed powders wet (that you can't go back, without scraping off a layer first - eek!).
So maybe you load your brush up, and then wet it a bit, without going back into your palette with a wet brush... See how you like it, and then go from there?

Did you use them wet or dry? They should be used dry for best results. I'm using the smoothie blenders from Silly Farm. Make sure your model is dry or they will get a bit blotchy. Sweaty kids need to be patted off. Just play with them & work w/ them till you get the right coverage. It takes some practice.
Here's some full face designs using the Ben Nye.

Nice Linda, I haven't ventured past the princess & eye design stuff.

Can I ask a really stupid question?
What makes them so different than intense eye shadow?

Got Another silly question: what makes them so different than metallics?billiebcc wrote:Can I ask a really stupid question?

Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
They are intense eye shadows with a nice shimmer like a metallic paint only softer and you can blend the edges better. I tried some other eye shadows from Coastal Scents when they were having their Christmas sale and they don't cover as well...these almost go on like paint.
I love my TAG pearls/metallics and use them for everything but I like these eyeshadows for teens and women especially because they don't feel sticky on the eyes like paint does and they don't crease. So they can be used as a great accompaniment to metallics both as an added intensity on top of colors or as a setting powder on eyes to make the paint stay and be more comfortable.
I've seen Marcela use them a lot just to punch up a color like when she's making 4th of July designs and wants a more intense red and blue.
I'm definitely not saying you have to have these but there are many uses for them, especially if you are in a place where paint sweats off faces easily but they are expensive so you might just buy a couple of "intense" eye shadows like a gold or blue or hot pink and try them first before investing in these.

Okay, the reason why I ask is I have this indie cosmetic company that I love love love...did I say I love them? LOL They have $1.00 samples of their colors and I have to say, I probably have ehm...err....maybe 50 different colors. Shhhh don't tell my hubs. (I really never thought I'd be THAT person!) Their colors are aMAZing! Anyway I was just wondering what made Ben Ney so much different or better than an intense eye shadow or if I could try this one in the same manner?
Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
I've not used the BNL palette, I can't afford it... But I do have a 120 colour eyeshadow palette in my kit. It's wonderful for eye designs (if a little difficult because the eye shadows are a little bigger than a penny) and also really useful for pretty eyeshadow with girly designs!
Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
They AREN'T any different than eye shadows. Frankly, I don't own the BN Lumiere powders as there are so many cheap alternatives.

Re: Ben Nye Lumiere Palette...not sure if I like it.
Yeah, I shouldn't have mentioned that I got my brush damp. I did that with the silver and just on the edge of the cake so I wouldn't ruin the whole thing, just in case because I wasn't quite sure. But for what I've been doing on eyes, I liked the wet effect but too bad for me if I want to go back. Guess I'll just have to get scraping.

I so love them. If you sign up for their newsletter they have free shipping all the time. I love their funky colors. I am so addicted. And I just used to a simple girl. See it was them then it was face painting. Yeah...that's it,

billiebcc wrote:So Shannon, do you use Starblends then?
Not for face painting. I have some foundation shades and white that I use for theatre - their original use is as pancake make-up/wet application. They were in my kit long before I started face painting.

I'm shocked. I thought you had been face painting since you got out of diapers!

She didn't paid for it until she was 6 or so. People just wouldn't take her seriously until she was out of kindergarten.

Yeah... Until I could reach high enough to paint someone in a chair it was difficult. And it was hard dragging my kit with my tricycle.
