I started with a butterfly mask. )
Maybe go to Snazroos picture gallery and do one of the step by steps.

Re: first designs?
Butterfly or Tiger.... those are the most useful!! Some gigs it seems like that's all I paint...

Re: first designs?
LOL. Butterfly and tiger were the ones I'm leaning towards actually!! DD wants a bunny face though. I got the SNAZAROO ZOO book with my kit but am not at all impressed by the designs.

Re: first designs?
I started with Spiderman, monster, and skull. Oh and clown. I tried a butterfly but got discouraged because, well, I just couldn't pull it off! Spiderman is a pretty easy and useful one as well, though!!!
Re: first designs?
I would try Tiger, dog, butterfly.... hearts... stuff like that. Then, you need to practice, practice, practice your tear drops and lines and swirls. Getting control of your brush will make ALL of the difference when you're out painting the kids!
Re: first designs?
Every face painter has to know butterfly, tiger and spiderman. I think you could do a whole gig on these three if you HAD to. Then branch out from there. Dog, Cat, Flower design, Batman and on and on until you know at least 20 designs that you can do in under 5 minutes(painting, not cleaning, waiting on the kid to decide ect.)
Re: first designs?
thanks for the advice! (you ladies are AWESOME!!!)
I used to do nails and paint freehand..talk about tedious! This is going to be WAY more fun!
ok off I go. Will report back.
oh and I only have 2 brushes right now (what came with the moms snazaroo kit). I am waiting for a set to come that I ordered- (though I really should have just got regular paint brushes-doh!!!)so I may have to just make do with what I have for now.

Re: first designs?
So I did the cheetah from the Snazaroo step by steps..I don't yet have brown though so I used orange, it looks a little funky but came out good for a first try! I will keep practicing. Need to work on blending for sure!! (Any tips?)..But otherwise cheetah is super easy!
Now off to do a butterfly on DD!

Re: first designs?
For blending I lay down two colors quickly and then while they are wet I dab back and forth between then until the bridge of empty space between them is bridged, blending one color into the other... and practice helps as well!
Re: first designs?
Do you blend with a brush or sponge?

Re: first designs?
April, you could always do what I did...
Order a bunch of stuff, then realizing that your ability to control the need for instant gratification is broken, go out buy a couple of brushes to play with...
I believe it was Gary C. (Snazaroo) who posted a lengthy list of important guidelines for face painting...buy new brushes on the list something like 4 or 5 times... I took him to heart

Re: first designs?
YES on the instant gratification!!!!! that's me!!
my two brushes worked pretty well. I just need more practice! luckily my 2 kids are willing. (4 and 5yo)
btw, I want to order some of the rainbow cakes in the fpf shop and saw the butterfly brushes. So I am wondering what the butterfly brushes achieve? does it make painting the curves of the wings easier? what are the different styles for? I notice some are small and some larger.

Re: first designs?
I just use a 1/4 slice of sponge for my butterfly wings. I've tried it with a brush and the poor thing looks war-beaten. There's a great tutorial from Silly Farm about applying butterfly wings:

Re: first designs?
I use my butterfly brush all the time when I'm doing little butterflies.... I use it as the background colour then outline it and put the little body and antennae.
But, I could probably do pretty well for a whole gig using nothing but my large round brush... I love that thing.
