Attaching Paints: Velcro vs magnets plus what glue?
I attached my paints to the bottom of my scrapbook paper holder at my last gig. I hot glued a few lines of velcro down and then hot glued the bits of velcro to the bottom of the paints. I went to pull out a paint at the gig and ripped the velcro of the bottom of the box. The next one I pulled off ripped the velcro off the paint box!
I obviously need to re think this.
My first thought is my glue.
For those of you who use velcro or magnets, what glue do you use? I did use the low melt hot glue- I do have a high melt one some where around here (obviously I couldn't find it when I started my project ). I was also thinking about pulling out the big guns and using some E6000. Recomendations??
Also, anyone tried both velcro and magnets? Which do you prefer?
I own about 4 miles of velcro which is why I tried it first. I do have a cookie sheet I could use for the magnets, and I may have some magnets around here too. I'm happy to try either, I just need to do it right this time.

I use velcro & the sticky back that comes with the velcro. It does come off the back of the pots after a while & you need to add more velcro.
Re: Attaching Paints: Velcro vs magnets plus what glue?
I also used sticky-back velcro circles. I just stuck them down on the inside of my plastic case and they've been fine so far.

I use two part expoxy to affix my magnets, but in the cold it becomes fragile and can break off if I drop my case...thank heavens I'm not a clutz. I love using the magnets instead of the velcro because it allows me to swap paints in and out of my cases without having to worry about lining up with a strip of velcro. Since the bottoms (and tops) of my cases are outfitted with covered metal, I can slap my paint pot anywhere (even on the hinge if I have a color that I'm using a lot) and I don't have to worry about it.
The one thing that I've heard a lot of complaints about with the velcro is the lifting of the tape. In my opinion, we pick up and put down our paints too much to allow velcro to be a good solution because the adhesive bond is being constantly strained simply by how we use it.
Good luck.

I have all my paints affixed with velcro and it works fine. The key is to peel off the label on the paint container so the velcros sticks to the container itself. If you attach it to the label yes it will hold for a while put the label will eventually give way.

Yup, the same thing happened to me. I abandoned the velcro idea and am considering magnets at this point. I tried hot glue, super glue, and gorilla glue and if gorilla glue doesn't hold it, nothing will! But every time I would try to pull a cake off the case, the whole strip of velcro would come up.
Re: Attaching Paints: Velcro vs magnets plus what glue?
see, I got no love for gorilla glue. E6000 is my 'if this doesn't work nothing will.'
Re: Attaching Paints: Velcro vs magnets plus what glue?
oh sweet e6000... how i love you. You can glue bricks together with that stuff... Yes, e6 is my go-to glue, but I didn't have any on hand at the time. (ok i am lying, i have it but i am messy and disorganized and couldnt find it. There. I admitted it.)

Of my kit?
Or of the magnets?
Here's a picture of my kit boxes:
I'll take a picture of the magnets when I get home (I'll try to remember, but I'm getting packed up for convention, so I may get distracted, lol)

I have the magnet set up also. I bought cheap children's art kits that came in a wooden case like this:
I found them for $10, and even saw them on clearance once for $5.
My local craft store sells 12x12 sheets of thin metal that are for "magnetic scrapbooking" for about $2 a piece. I bought a few sheets of that as well as the 2 part epoxy glue. Got a pair of metal cutters from the hardware store (around $10 I think), and just cut down the metal sheets to fit in the box after I took all the inserts out and glued them down.
Then on my paints I use either the epoxy or super glue to attach small Neodymium Magnets (the silver ones) to the bottoms. The regular black magnets are too weak. They're about $2 for 6 magnets, and when I use up all the paint in a container I can typically pry the magnet off and re-use them.
The magnet method is great because little hands aren't expecting the paints to fight back when they try to grab them, plus I don't worry about someone knocking into my table and everything going flying. Plus it's all easy to move around and reposition whenever I buy a bunch of new things and have to rearrange everything (again). I should paint my case black like LJ's but mine's still the natural wood color with the silver metal sheets inside.

I know this is old but how big were the Neodymium Magnets that you bought to put on the back of your paints?
