Making Split Cakes

So I've read the topics I can find about making splits. It seems the best way to do this is from paints of the same brand, correct?

Has anyone made splits from Paradise? If so how did they work?

It seems that most have been made from TAG or Wolfe or DFX.

I'm thinking about placing another order...(shhhh don't tell my hubs) and instead of ordering a lot of split cakes I thought maybe getting colors to make some.

just remeber when making them you have to pay for the whole cakes..so if you want 5 colors in one the tag cake would cost you 13.oo..if you buy 5 full pots to make cakes your lookint at around 25 to 30 dollars..but in all you can make 5 rainbow cakes out of these 5 pots just in different color order

I've only made them with Snaz and that was because I didn't have any time to order the splits I needed... But it worked pretty well, a bit messy but the result was great. LisaJoyYoung has a great tutorial on making rainbow cakes on youtube.

Right, so if I get 7 colors I could make sooo many splits at least that's what I'm thinking at my dull day job......I have to keep my mind active somehow. Barb you live in my area. One of my friends told me about you facepainting at her bar for GB Packer something.

Bekah, I saw that a while ago and now I'm antsy......LOL sooo antsy and I have a 3 day weekend from work. That always spells trouble.

I have made a LOT of them. I love them and I like having several colors in different combos or mixes. Also, if you have extra you can pot the regular colors in little containers and have a huge tray with a variety of colors. My favorite have been wolfe and TAG (mainly TAG is what I did). I did some with Paradise and while I love the paint they require wider strips to get good consistency since they blend so well. I mix brands all the time too, can be a pain when activating them at different rates - ie neon vs. regular. I also took some extra paint and made large rainbow cakes with tiger colors, green colors, neon and a nice pink and purple with white for butterflies. PM me for any specific questions but it was awesome and while I spent a lot, I can refill easily, I took the leftovers and made individual color pallettes and I have about 30 different splits - totally awesome! Also, some of my new ones I did Paradise black and white which really blend nicely in the splits and aren't as obvious as with wolfe and TAG. I have also heard TAG pearl white is nice, I ordered some and am waiting on delivery.

Thank you Lorrin! That is exactly what I was wondering. I love Paradise for it's creamy consitency, after a while I find that TAG, Wolfe and DFX flake on me, but I was wondering if for split cakes it would get a little, smeary? (if that's the word.)

I got this little jewelry case at Michael's that has I think 40 tiny little boxes (like Metina's shop) that are all empty, two different sizes about 1" each. I used these and have the case to hold them all in. it leaves a small space in the split which has room for excess water which is nice. Also, I got a clear box from Michael's with little round containers, each with individual lids but I took them all off, I then filled individual colors in these and hot glue gunned them into the container, as long as nothing is too wet it does fine with just the main lid. These all could fit into a very small container but I use them in my fat max. I have the large containers for large rainbow splits and main colors like black, white, and red. It works really well!

I've gone a little split crazy. Have very few single color containers left. Sorry color is off just a tad. Metallics aren't showing well. and

It's been a little by little effort but I love my kit! With this addiction though it's just hard to say ENOUGH!

I love making my own splits. I also purchase them as well. I do find that most split cakes on the market work better on fairer skinned people and did not translate well on olive to darker skin tones. So I have come up with several splits I made especially for working with those tones of skin.

I have quickly found that playing around with not only color but also the different hues of color makes all the difference in something that is not flattering or is just ok to something that is so beautifully complimentary. I mean we all know from clothing to hair color to make up....... all colors are not for all people.

I mean I really take the time to see and consider the undertones in a persons skin whether they be pink, yellow, red to know what colors will work best on them. I wasn't really finding what I wanted so I decided to make them myself.

How true! A lot of my clients have been black and latino children and i've found that some pastel paints just kinda....fade away on their skin. It only recently occurred to me that I could make my own splits but its the trial and error thats driving me a little nuts.

Tamara, I'd love to see a pic of which colors you think are flattering for darker skins. I want each person to feel awesome regardless of their skin tone and if I could make some splits that I knew would be awesome on darker skin it would be worth the time/money to me.

yes tamara i would love to know what you use...your work always seams to really pop and the colors so vibrant.

I have many strips of colors left and trade them at my Jam to create new splits or refill my current ones, mostly Snaz sparkling, electric & metallic.

Oops, forgot to add that each well contains ALL classic OR all sparkling, electric & metallic colors. My floral colors in the OS pallet below are all DFX because Snaz blends too well to show contrast between petals.

When I first started ordering split cakes DFX were the only ones readily available from my supplier in the UK. They are really small and last no time at all and I always manage to wear them down unevenly. I sorted it by buying the colours in full discs and replenishing the colours in the split cakes as when I need to.

With regard to paradise split cakes, I ordered some prisma cakes and really love them. I replenish them the same as the DFX splits.

Having all that extra paint means that I can come up with my own combos
as well. It may seem like a lot of money in one go but at least you have stock in, you pay less postage in the long run and as I never know when I'll get busy or what will become the popular split there's no panic ordering. I have to be a bit organized as everything takes a minimum of 4 working days to get here.

You can only get Snazaroo paints here. Everything else has to come from the UK.

Like you i thought i would make the investment and make my own split cakes. i seem to go through neon rainbow cakes very quickly so I got single cakes of each of the diamond FX neon colours and cut them up - giving me 7 cakes for considerably less.

They do work well - my only advice would be to make it thick and really squish them together as mine started to separate a bit.

I have also made lots of snaz splits - orange and yellow for tigers, pink and purple for butterflies - a tip I discovered on FPF.
I was on a split cake making frenzy and ran out of actual face paint cake holders so i devised my own by taking a plastic disposable drinking cup and cutting it down. Gave me the perfect size for some one strokes!

Didn't buy them-just bought the gems that came in them. I repurposed the containers as they were awesome for one-strokes. Seven splits in one container - gotta love that!
