Henna in a shop
has anyone done henna in a shop, like a hair cutting studio? I did a Henna Happening Party at a gals hair studio and invited alot of friends telling them I was just starting out and giving sampler henna designs for just $5, 10-15 dollars. It was well attended and I did henna on about 8 ladies and teens. It was a fun evening of ladies out. But at the end the shop keeper wanted a cut!! I was so taken aback because SHE KNEW Ihad slashed my prices to get people in and into her shop!! Well, she was nice enough to handle the money while I did the henna but man if she did not take 45% of my earnings!! I was smokin' mad but kept my cool because I am hoping for repeat business in her shop. I have since learned that even a 50:50 cut for hair studios is not unusual for the owner and stylist.
What do other henna artists think? I know its her shop but boy oh boy that seems ridiculous! Am I off target on this?

I think that if someone is expecting to take a "cut' of your earnings, it is usual to work that out ahead of time. I would feel a little disrespected if I were in the same situation. Is there another shop that you could approach with a written proposal?
Re: Henna in a shop
That is the way hair studios work. All the hair dressers are renting space from the owner so they either pay a % of what they earn or they pay a flat rate to rent the space/chair.
I think 45% is a bit high though for a ladies night gig where you brought in all your friends and she most definitely should have said she was taking a % up front in the first place.

50 / 50 would be usual but the studio owner provide all the supplies, I think is pretty high because 1: they were your own supplies, 2: You cut the prices off 3: you didn't discuss that before.

Oh gosh, thanks gals for the feedback. I was SO surprised that she intended to get a cut after all our discussing pricing, time and advertizing. You all are right though I should of asked straight out, " Are you expecting a slice of the pie on this gig?".
But then I was surprized again to learn the set up for the percentage a stylist has to pay a shop keeper. WOW!
We are now in discussion about another henna party...only this time I am clearly stating the percentage I am able to afford to give her for shop overhead. IF she does not agree then it is ok. We will either renegotiate or not make a deal.
Thankssooo much.
