Hi guys! New to face painting.

I was eagerly awaiting my activation email and it finally came! I was so excited. I just found my love for face painting just this week. I was offered a job doing it at a restaurant to encourage more families with kids to eat. I haven't started yet but I am super stoked. I use to draw on myself with bic markers when I got bored and the stuff came out really well but I never thought to face paint so when the job was brought up I did some research, found this forum and fell in love. I have watched countless youtube videos and looked for any step by step stuff. The paints I got at first were Tulip which I dislike they stain really bad. But they did what I needed them to do which was practice

So now I need to buy more paints and brushes from what I read Dfx is what I need. From what I understand its better for cheek art and to use Loew Cornell for my brushes. I would like to find some good books but Book-a-Mil Did not carry any AT ALL was very upset about this today.

Anyways sorry I kept rambling on! But I wanted to say Hi to everyone I am excited to be apart of this forum and look forward to learning a lot!!

Hello and welcome! I'm a newbie here and new face painter, too. This is a wonderful forum and the kind folks here have been sooooo helpful and encouraging, you found the right place!

There is an online shop here in case you didn't see the link at the top of the forum and I've heard the shipping is super fast! My advice is to start with a DFX black and white to use for linework and accents, plus a small basic color palette (maybe there is a DFX palette that includes the b/w?) I started fp about 3.5 months ago and learned the hard way how much better DFX is for linework/swirls/dots/teardrops. For brushes you can do a lot with a round #4 and a basic small flat brush. I love my Lowel Cornell and Royal Majestic round brushes the best - when shopping look for brushes used with watercolors since the paints are all waterbased (someone here gave me that great advice).

I found MANY incredibly helpful videos on youtube and also be sure to check out Shannon Fennel's blog with her step-by-step tutes. Something that really helps me is saving pictures of designs I feel inspired by or think I can learn, in a folder in my computer. I paint with the pictures up next to me and that has been the fastest and easiest way for me to quickly learn designs (I'm up to about 40 designs already).

The artycakes/mini-rainbow cakes are pricey but IMO soooo worthwhile for very fast yet impressive faces. If nothing else, treat yourself to a mini neon rainbow cake - the girls will go crazy for pretty rainbows coming out of a heart on their forehead or swept one side of the forehead to the other with a little sparkly white cloud, and it will take you all of 2 minutes with your 1" flat brush and poof of white fairy dust glitter. You can also do a simple bracelet right around the arm and use your white paint to create a "sparkle" star shape coming off it.

My fastest and most requested boys designs so far are snakes/serpents/dragons and I do them all with the arty cakes/mini rainbow cakes in leafy green shades.

One-stroke roses are super easy and impressive and you can do one-stroke leaves to go with them (use your "snake" artycakes for leaves).

Thank you for all the advise! I will definitely be ordering from the website! Its cheaper then the local costume store that sells Mehron/Paradise paints, even after shipping its 5 dollars cheaper! Do the DFX stain bad? My boyfriend still has purple stain from the tulip and its been about 3 days!

My friends do not understand the fun of face painting its very relaxing and makes me happy. I haven't even done that much yet and its all I can think about.

I saw some videos on the one-stroke art Im a little scared to try that stuff
yet. Its def going to take practice to learn techniques.

I feel like Im about to spend a lot of money on this, I already have a love of art supplies im always buying new markers and pens. I'll just need to hold myself back

Welcome! Some people think the DFX black stains if applied directly to the skin, so try useing a base color, then do the black on top of it. If the skin stains it might be due to a dry skin condition, so just use a moisurizer, like baby oil, then shampoo the area again while taking a shower. Good luck and have fun

I'd rather buy face paint and art supplies than chocolate! The DFX black is the most heavily pigmented/stain-likely of all my paints but with a bit of soap and water it comes off me and my kids without leaving much if anything at all. The few times there have been any traces they were faint and came off with another washing.

Welcome, I am new the the forum also, it sounds like you have the addiction too.

You already received a lot of great advice, but here is my 2 cents. Definitely order from the forum. I just did and recieved my paints in 3 days. The shipping further reduces the cost of the paints, which are already priced well. I have been using mostly Wolfe and DFX, a little Paradise and some Krylon Interference (I probably spelled that wrong). I just got the pearl from Tag and used it this weekend (pretty much ignored my other paints, except black and white, DFX and Wolfe.

The pearls and metalix blend so well, my painting became much quicker once I started using them. The dotter sponges and reg sponges are so helpful.

It sounds like you have to get fast....fast. My best advice is practice things you love, add a few each week and get fast at those. Then just do what you are already doing.......Having FUN!!!

Oh, and one more thing. once you buy paints, look up how to make your own one strokes. It's ok to cut up a cake and take a few strips of what ever color to make what ever combos you need. They are wonderful and so fun. You can get the flat brushes at Walmart for about 5.00 for 3 in 3 sizes. It's such a time saver, and so fun.

So should I get TAG? Its sounds like awesome paint. Im probably ordering Tomorrow. I'll probably get the brushes at A.C. Moore cause I have a coupon depending on what they have.

This is all great advise I will defiantly have a lot of questions when I start. Im glad Im not alone and have all of you to help me along.

As others have said, DFX is great for linework.

Tag is great.... to me, much the same as DFX, but cheaper!

For myself only - I've been using the Paradise black with children for linework with little to no complaints about staining.

Also, some find DFX and TAG to feel "tight" as it dries on the skin..... since most (though only a few if you count) are children, I have started using Paradise, TAG metallics, and Snazaroo sparkles for bases....


I'm new to face painting as well.... and have found that I'm rather a tackle tart when it comes to collecting paints/stuff.

Brushes - I wait until they go on sale at Hobby Lobby/etc... usually 40% to 50% every third week or so..... I add a couple of packs at a time!

Don't forget sponges!

I keep meaning to order some of the FFW sponges.. but, usually end up spending my money elsewhere... so... I bought my round sponges at Hobby Lobby (on sale, again).. and bought car sponges at WalMart and cut them to size.. they work great!

Metina has a lovely iridescent glitter (I don't remember the color).. it looks white.. but, reflects most colors that you put it over.. it's great for the "go to" glitter.... I seldom use any other color.

Ok cool I will definitely pick up some paradise black as well and sponges and glitter I have been making my list today. I think I might go with DFX Black and White and get the TAG colors. And as far as brushes either mark reid or Loew Cornell.

I'm near Myrtle Beach just moved here in January. I know everyone has been so helpful! I can't wait to get started with new supplies.

Cool! My dad lives in North Myrtle so we head that way a few times a year I love the DFX paints, and wolfe brothers stuff. The paradise is nice too, and all the kids seem to like the way it smells

Welcome,and you are sure to really enjoy facepainting. I advise you to get a wolfe white and black and some colors and few split cakes as they are fantastic to work with. Get practice with your brush work making teardrops, swirls, and thin-thick-thin lines and start creating. Let us all see what you are doing.
