using glitter on lips / around the mouth
I've seen several videos and pictures of face painting where the artist uses glitter on or near the mouth.
Are there any concerns about the children/people ingesting the glitter?
I've run a search here, but couldn't find anything... I thought that some of the seasoned glitter/face painters might have some information on this topic..
Thanks!

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
Not the craft store glitter... the glitters like those sold in the forum... and other face painting supply stores.

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
glitter doesn't do any harm if ingested. That goes for all glitters. They aren't toxic, the particles are so small the GI tract won't know the difference, and even if it did, your intestines are tougher than you would think! The glitter would just pass on through and end up in the toilet (wouldn't that be interesting to witness? LOL).
The reason we don't use craft glitter on the face is because it is made of different material than Face Paint glitter and can really do some damage to the conjuntiva and cornea of the eye if it gets in there. So no, there really is nothing wrong at all about putting glitter on the lips, it may feel a little weird at first, but it's perfectly harmless.

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
Thanks, Punky.
I have no experience with glitter other than what I have purchased from Metina... and hadn't tried putting it on anyone's mouth because of my concerns.

Thanks again!

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
some craft store glitters can be made with glass too. But, if you are using face paint glitter then it is fine. I put glitter on my own lips every time I paint myself. I offer it to my kids in line provided that I have the time. If I have 20 kids in line then I don't usually offer it. I do tell kids not to put glitter from home on their lips and that my special glitter is really special because it is made to wear like make up.

That always worries me too! But, everyone says it is no big deal if - AND WHEN - they eat it.
hhhmmmmm
Gotta say, I do it too!
There is a lip glitter you can get right now at the 99 Cent store. It is really just our shimmer powder. Not as pretty as using glitter. But, it is made by Maybelline, and meant for the lips.

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
Yeah, a lot of cosmetic companies market that shimmer powder as an alternative to lip gloss since it provides a high gloss shine but none of the gooey stickiness of lip gloss.
But really, there are no adverse side effects to injesting glitter let alone putting it on your lips. People say not to eat it simply because... well, it's a bit of a dumb thing to do, if it's not food, don't eat it...common sense.

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
Yes, this is a funny story. You know when you buy shoes they often will have those little packets in them that have the little clear or white balls to keep the shoes smelling like "new shoes". They say DO NOT EAT in black letters across them. When my son was about a year old he got into a packet of those that came inside his Easter shoes. I FREAKED out!!! I thought he was surely poisoned and going to die so I called the poison control. They said well that even though it was for freshness it was not actually harmful, the biggest danger was him choking himself on eating too many little balls at once. LOL!!!

Ok, I have a really dumb question . . . I have not used glitter on lips yet as I only have a little boy to practise on, but I have a niece coming tomorrow . . . do you just paint the lips with paint and then pat the glitter on? I'm assuming this is how it is done but just wanted to make sure, I can hear my glitter clling!! Thanks

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
I prefer to use my poofer, even though it gets a little messy that way. But then I'm not actually touching their ips.
Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
Everyone has their own way of doing everything. I like the control I get by using my finger, but the hand sanitizer is never far away!
And just a side note... why are all of our responses in Italics????

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
I poof for almost everything. It's so much faster that way. The other day I forgot my poofer. Dabbing glitter on everyone drove me crazy.
Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
I also dab with my finger and keep a bottle of hand sanitizer handy and squirt after each paint. I tried the dipping the brush in water and then glitter method the other day and it worked
Never used a puffer, feel like is not going to stick to the paint, do you guys puff while is wet or at the end?
hahaha Punky, I thought I was the only one who notices these things LOL I also wonder why

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
Haven't any of you yet had the experience of getting home after a long glittery gig and blowing your nose... and getting a tissue full of glitter snot?
And I've managed to eat glitter too (NOT on purpose!!)... just goes on through. Kinda like the kitten with glitter bum after eating the tinsel off the Christmas tree.

That is stunning Lilly, I love your work!
Do you mist the face before poofing the glitter?

Re: using glitter on lips / around the mouth
What brand of cosmetic face painting glitter is the best and where do you purchase it? Our daughter is beginning to face paint and we want to buy her the correct glitter to go with her Snazaroo, Paradise, and Wolfe paint. This is def a task. Finding the right brushes was the worst. I might have to learn how to face paint ;-D
