First attempt to advertise Empty First attempt to advertise

Post by Gr8ful Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:30 am

Well, I am getting ready to go do this show at the Learning Disabilities Assoc. Fundraiser (Literacy and Learning) today and I am nervous about presenting myself for pay. Anyone else have that little "who do you think you are?" self-destruction button in their thoughts when they started out trying to charge for their face painting? I went to my local thrift store and bought some funky and bright table runners to put on the display table and still need to stop in at WalMart to look for a clear tablecloth so I can display my work underneath without worrying that someone will spill their lunch or coffee on my designs and the few pics I have. I have to go do my own face now and will see if I can get someone to take a picture for me. I know 2 of the other display people and they both want to be painted already so I am fairly certain they will take a pic of me for my portfolio. Now all I have to do is figure out how to post them here.

I would really appreciate some feedback from you when I get them on here if you would be so kind to this newbie?

Thanks...Judy aka Gr8ful

Have fun at your first event! I'm guessing from what you're saying that THIS event is not for pay but you are hoping for paying gigs coming from it? Hand out TONS of cards, don't stress over a line, just keep painting WELL and don't rush yourself. They can't complain if they aren't paying for it... well, they might, but they shouldn't LOL

Never feel guilty about charging for your work, if everyone could do it, they wouldn't bother paying you... they can't do it, that's why they need us Very Happy

Be confident and have your words well rehearsed so that you sound natural and relaxed. Do not appear desperate. Treat YOURSELF as a professional whose time and skills are valuable, and others will treat you the same. Smile I know it's terrifying! It gets easier. Good luck!

I actually 'put on' a different persona or personality when I am painting. I think its from all the time clowning. When the event starts I am THE professional. Pretend to be the best in the world and stay calm. No stress, a little mess, and no worries! If you are calm and confident it will show in your work and it will effect the attitudes of the people around you.

Thank you for all the encouragement and tips. It went okay but I only got to do 2 faces before they needed the room. I still had fun and was able to display what I do for a few hours. The table I decorated was not the table they seated me at for the show/luncheon. ??? Weird but now I know for next year's event. I dragged my kit in for no reason because all I could do was display the pictures under the clear plastic tablecloth. LOL!

I will try to figure out how to post the 2 pics later today if I get a chance to. I need to paint my schoolbus windows for St Patty's Day week too sometime today.
