complaints about staining?
hello,
a lot of you mention issues with various colours/brands staining. i was just curious if this is just your own experience when you practice on yourself, or have any of you actually had a parent come back to you after an event and berate you for staining their child??!

Re: complaints about staining?
Never. I have had some say that it stained last year, but well, they are back so they aren't too bothered.
I just put the directions to remove the paint on the back of the card. It tells them if there is some staining to wash again the next day and not scrub the skin off the first time.
Our skin is porous and thus absorbs stuff. Some more than others. It is highly pigmented make-up. If some says "Will this stain?" I say, "Probably for a day or so, but it isn't permanent."
I really don't worry about this and am certainly not going to stop using some of my favorite colors because they do their job. If I know I am using one that is particularly bad, I will put down metallix white as a base. It doesn't really change the color and goes on super light!

Re: complaints about staining?
When I was painting at the market in the summer every Saturday, I did have a few parents tell me that they had trouble getting some colours off. None of them seemed bothered by it too much but they did mention it. There was one mother who was a little upset about it - they had a terrible time with the green (not unusual), but she let him get painted again no problem - she just asked me not to use that colour on him again.
I do now have instructions printed on the back of my cards, and I have a quick little speech that I give when asked about it.
At Halloween I did a Darth Maul face on a man, and I warned him that he might have trouble with staining. He didn't care, he was thrilled with it (and tipped me $10!). The next week I asked him about it and he laughed and said the only thing that stained was around the eyes it looked like he had eyeliner on.

Re: complaints about staining?
I've never had a parent complain or go out of their way to tell me about any staining. This past summer as I was explaining to a parent about how easily it comes off. That just water will take most off, a little soap will take the rest off & I always say especially w/the little ones "Baby wipes work great, I'm sure you have those on hand"... As I was saying all that one mother (ironically enough the woman who hired he for the event in question) stepped in & said "it really wasn't that easy to get off my son's face, but then again you did warn me of the RED & he didn't use soap like I told him to" everyone laughed & joked about how he was just trying to keep it on longer. & joking on him to introduce him to Mr. Soap. Etc. Etc. Bottom line, like most people have said "its not that serious & clients will come back if they're satisfied w/your work & personality.
Re: complaints about staining?
My face painting business card has removal instructions on the back for face painting, henna and glitter tats. I also tell them not to scrub, that if it doesn't come off the first time, try again a few hours later. If it still resists, lotion or olive oil also helps with removal. I've never had anyone complain to my face and I have a lot of repeat clients. The worst staining color that I have used is the Paradise Metallic Green. It's awful, so I always use a base color under it first. My fingers are always green for a day or two =).

Re: complaints about staining?
I've had issues w/ staining on myself, but I still put the paint on
I say something similar to Metina when people ask about staining. It may stain lightly, but if you follow the removal instructions on the back of my card it is less likely to stain. I remind them not to rub & really recommend not to use baby wipes as I've heard of reactions with them & wipes promote scrubbing.
I've had 1 parent I know complain about staining. Her son is a redhead w/ very freckled skin. She now will not allow me to use any black on her child, but still lets me paint him(she's pretty particular about everything & tends to stir things up, etc, so.....).

I have never had anyone complain of staining, and I too use DFX/Wolfe for everything. I have just incorporated some Tag and some paradise into my kit....we'll see how that goes.
But you see how much I paint my own face and not once has it ever stained me or my daughter

Re: complaints about staining?
I stain... I've gone to work with blue and/or green designs on my face numerous times... Once I had a leaf pattern for four days, once angry blue eyebrows for about three days...
Certain brands are really bad on my skin for staining.
And then there is the Wolfe black semi-permanent eyeliner I end up with... for two weeks. People start saying to me "Oh, you started wearing make-up!" cause it looks like I'm wearing eyeliner everyday!

Bahahaha...funny you brought up Wolfe black as eyeliner. My hubby had a skull face for halloween and had "eyeliner" on for a few days after =).

I've started telling everyone NOT to use baby wipes as I had a child last week who reacted to them and at first her mum thought it was the paint. So this weekend and yesterday I spent the whole day making sure parents knew just gentle soap that they have used before and warm water. I'm thinking of going on vistaprint and doing care info cause I always give a care card for henna it seems ease parents minds as there is contact info etc
Re: complaints about staining?
Thanks for the input...I guess I've just been really fortunate (for over 10 years). I've been using baby wipes on myself & my girls for many years to clean off face paint (very easy, no rubbing just wiping)....and I've never had anybody complain to me either. For the most part I do tell parents that soap and water will do the trick; again, I guess I've been really fortunate but I will keep that in mind. Thanks!
Re: complaints about staining?
I don't use baby wipes at all as I always felt like they were too scratchy... I buy the Walmart brand facial wipes in bulk and they work great. Not only that, they're meant for the FACE and not the bottom ... Olay and Dove also have the wet facial wipes, but the generic brand is the softest. I use it on my own face everyday to remove my makeup.

Re: complaints about staining?
Last spring I came home from an event just absolutely beat. It was around supper time, so my husband and I decided to just go out instead of making a mess of the kitchen. I quickly wiped off my facepaint (it was a floral design that continued down my neck, that by this time was a little smudgy.) and we swept out the door. Now, the restraunt was tiny, and they weren't terribly busy but the waiter spent a lot of time around our table. And when he wasn't at our table he was standing at the register watching our table. Then he called the cook out and they both started watching! I was getting a little creeped out, so we asked for boxes and I went to the ladies room while my husband paid the check. OMG! When I saw myself in the mirror... I looked like I had been beaten up! The paint left horrible stains that looked exactly like bruises on my eye. And on my neck-- choke marks! I promise you I couldn't have done it better with a bruise kit. They must have thought he beat me! We haven't been back to that resturant since.
Re: complaints about staining?
That's so funny! I've given kids "black eyes" before & watched their mom's reaction when they think it's real
Re: complaints about staining?
thanks guys, interesting to hear all your experiences. i have never had a problem on my own skin, and never had a complaint from a parent yet. good to hear that no one has had any really horrible confrontations about it. and like a couple of you mentioned, even those kids that did get stained were allowed to come back for repeat painting, so obviously it is not that much of an issue. i would think that some parents almost expect their kid to have a tinge for a few days!!

Re: complaints about staining?
I use baby wipes to clean every face before I paint them...hhmm, maybe I should use something else. Wolfe black and green stain my skin, all snazaroo greens stain my skin a littlebut, I am very fair complected. I border somewhere between translucent and light white : ) LOL! I just tell the parent that most often it washes off with soap and water but that make up remover works best for darker colors. I have never had anyone to really care. I usually do not say anything unless they are getting like a panda face or something that I think is going to be hard to remove later. I do hand out a care card as well.
