Worst advice ever!!
I was discussing the issue of advice with a friend of mine. We got onto the subject of giving advice and how many folk give advice they'd never actually take themselves. For example, I have a sister who gives awful advice she'd never take herself. It could be because she's a banker and has the 'well, it's good enough for you but not me' attitude. Anyway I thought this was a classic...
'Some years ago I had the option of moving home, the council flats I was living in were being refurbed and I was offered a house. I hummed and hawed and ran it passed a few people and weighed it all up. One friend in particualar (an older lady) said, 'oh Máire, I'd move if I were you, it sounds like the place you're being offered is very good'. Now I have to say, I had my reservations about the new area but I though, 'I have to make a decision, all things considered, I'll move'.
A couple of years later, some of my fears of moving had come to pass and were coming to a head (anti-social behaviour in the area). I didn't hold anyone responsible for my decision and I took it on the chin. I was on the residents assoc. and we were tackling it. I was relating this to the aforementioned lady, just telling her what was going on in my life. She jumped in with, 'Well Máire, if I had been you, I'd have never moved from the council flat. It was a mistake to move from there'.
You can bet your bottom dollar that I pointed out to her that she had infact given me advice to the contrary some two years earlier. Her face dropped. She genuinely didn't remember. So what's the moral of the story?? Not only should we not take onboard every piece of advice we're given, we should watch the advice we give out too! When folk say 'if I were you...', they may not be genuinly measureing their values and circumstances fairly against the seeker of advice.
Anyone else got a 'lousy advice story'???

Re: Worst advice ever!!
Moving my mom into her last apartments 2 yrs ago. I was advised it was the best place ever. That was the worst 2 yrs ever for me as I "put out fire after fire" of trouble she got into. She really needed to stay in the assisted living place she was at. Now she's having a harder time readjusting. I had to move her back to the ALS a few months ago.

Not really sure just yet, still outweighing the pros and cons.
I went to a see a lawyer on the advice of a friend, because my then husband had talked to several lawyers.
I went to a lawyer and she said serve him first and he'll either wake up or say, " wait I still want to be married". He was served and left immediately. So now I'm 53 divorced and living way below the means I was before. I'm told that the divorce was my idea, etc.
The most positive thing is I don't have to listen to his daily gripe about work.
The most negative is no money!! I'm trying my hardest, but it's one step forward and two back.
What ever happened to helping each other and honoring thy vows?
It's like 34 yrs. didn't matter at all.

On a 'good advice' note.... Maya Angelou once said 'Never threaten what you're not going to do'.
I thought this was good advice because folk call each others bluff all the time. I'm not being funny, but in the conversation I had with my friend before I started this thread, her worst advice was from a solicitor!!! (lawyer in American speak). I think Lawyers give foolish advice more than wise.

Funny! Here in the USA a solicitor is that awful person that calls you during dinner wanting you to get their credit card.
