Anyone remember doll cakes? Empty Anyone remember doll cakes?

Post by CreateFaces Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:43 am

My daughter just turned 8 and is getting into Barbie.

This year we had a family party for my little brother, my son, my nephew and my daughter on Halloween before trick or treating since my mum and little bro needed to head back to Illinois.

So everyone got their own little cake. When I was a girl, my grandmother used to make doll cakes. I made one for my daughter when she was 3, but she didn't really remember it so I decided to make one with a real Barbie in it.

Here's a pic when it was finished, before it was almost destroyed on the bumpy 35 minute drive to my sister's.

Here's after I had to salvage the collapsing top and cover it with frosting, though my daughter still loved it Very Happy

Oh yes, I remember doll cakes. Never got one of my own. Sad

Looks like your daughter really enjoyed hers, though!

Cool idea! I now know what I am doing for my daughter's 7th birthday in March. Any links or must have directions on how to make these a success?

I had a doll cake dressed as a bride for my bridal shower. (30+ years ago, lol!) Metina, if you go to www.wilton.com and search on doll cakes you can find all sorts of styles and directions. You don't have to buy their special pan, though. Any oven safe bowl with the right shape will do.

Pampered chef makes the perfect size pyrex batter bowl, but mine went missing. If you have this, you're golden, because you can bake your cake in that and it is the perfect height for the dress.
Anyone remember doll cakes? Pamp_c10

Since mine is MIA, I used a pyrex mixing bowl and a mini pyrex cup to stack on top to make the cake tall enough.

The mistake I made was frosting a crumb coat before I put the doll down through the hole. Normally, not a problem, but because I had to stack the little cake on top and it was very fragile after cutting the hole in it, it started to collapse as I lowered the doll in and the plastic wrap around the doll caught on the frosting. It was almost a disaster, but I recovered.

My only suggestion is to use a real doll as opposed to the half doll toppers that are sold in cake shops because they are not as pretty and their hair falls out easily. I also made doll cupcakes before and they were the cutest. They have mini doll toppers at cake stores that seems to stay together better and it so cute to decorate 12 different dress styles.

Oh, these are soooo much fun to make!! Designing the dress can be a blast! I had one 50 years ago for my 5th birthday- oh my that was a long time ago. I made one in the 70's for a high school how to speech. It was the only speech I gave that I had the full attention of the boys - they wanted to eat the cake. Made some 25 years ago for my dd birthdays. Now I am waiting for grand daughters Very Happy

I had a Barbie cake for my 6th birthday, but it was in an ice-by-number cake pan that my mom borrowed from my aunt. She also had a Barney and a Winnie-the-Pooh that she borrowed for my brother's 3rd and 4th birthdays, respectively.

Man, those "ice by number" pans you're talking about are really hard! The lines of the cake pan disappear and you basically have to look at the picture of the finished product to ice them. Here's the 2 that I have done and they were hard work, about 2 hours each. The other is the Dora cake I did from scratch.
I don't have digital photos of the cakes I made for my son throughout the years, but they were so much fun to design and make from scratch: flying saucer, football, baseball, Greenday album cover.

Those were cool!

When my DS was a little guy, I did an Ernie ice by number once. The following year I made an Elmo, but that was totally from scratch. I couldn't afford the cake pan!
Have always done homemade cakes for the kids, so we have done princess castles, lego, a firetruck. I forget all the different kinds.

Great job on the Spiderman, Create-a-Face! I did that one, but it didn't look anywhere near as good as yours.

Thanks, yeah, I had no idea how hard those things were. That was my first of those kinds of cakes and I was practically in tears over it because I started frosting it at like 9:45pm and it took hours to finish.
