My first tutorial...

Okay so... I recorded a youtube tutorial for a project I am working on, and then decided not to use it, so I thought I'd share it with you. I'm really self-conscious about my voice - had a hard time talking, thinking and painting all at the same time, haha! This is my first attempt at any sort of video, and I covered the work up with my hand half the time unknowingly, but here it is anyway!

This is the same butterfly that was done for the Snazaroo butterfly theme kit, by the way.

You have such a sweet voice too, there is nothing wrong with it at all! I understand how you feel though, I tried making a video for youtube the other day and I really did sound dumb, I gave up and put up a picture slide show instead

That's a great tutorial. There's nothing wrong with your voice and your gave great instruction, anything more talking might be just crapping on.

Nothing wrong with your voice - My harsh Aussie accent has stopped me doing any videos.
Just one small suggestion..... it would have been better if you showed how you loaded your sponge in the first place. I know how you got that blend but maybe others without so much experience wouldn't.
Other then that - you model is beautifull and did and awesome job, sitting so well, and your butterfly is clean, crisp and lovely.

Thanks everyone! Tash, I thought about showing the brush/sponge loading, but had the camera on a tripod and the paints in my (heavy clunky) pro-palette. I'll try and figure out how to do that next time though. I know that when I first started out, I didn't "get" double-loading sponges until I SAW it myself!

I'd love to see how you load that sponge and how you get your white looking so clean and crisp over colours.

I second that, I would love to see how you double loaded your sponge.

I actually have a split cake for the white/pink base, so I just swiped the sponge across it at the edge. Loading it on the edge helps you to apply on one side of the face with a sharp control, and then reverse and apply on the other side as well. As for the white looking clean, it's mainly the brand. I use Snaz for bases and Diamond FX white for linework, so the white is more dominant and stands out clearly over the Snaz. I've also recently switched to a script brush for my highlights, which I LOVE! It holds a nice amount of paint and is soft enough at the tip not to leave a mark in the paint.

I thought the video was perfect, just enough tips, some creative secrets, but not spoon feeding the whole kit and caboodle. I can't remember who it was that advised against revealing all of the tricks in your arsenal, but it's advice I live by. And...I don't know what you're talking ... your voice sounds pleasant and your hand didn't block anything that the mind couldn't fill in anyway.

I feel the same way about my voice. I don't realize that I have such a high pitched voice, until I hear a recording of it. It's no surprise that I sing soprano, lol!
I would like to see some video on sponge loading. Being new to this, I'm still finding my way.

Yes, showing how you loaded your sponge & brush would be good. I see a lot of people load the edge of the sponge, but I haven't got the hang of it. I load the whole flat side of the sponge. I'm sure I'm wasting a ton of paint this way.

That was a great tut, I am a newbie and it helped me alot Angie, wait till u hear me with my southern twang when I get better and dare to do a tut. lol!!!!

I know that somewhere on the web there's a Wolfe Bro. video where sponge loading is explained. I pretty much learned through trial and error because there wasn't anything like that around for me (or at least I didn't know about it if it was).

I learned sponging by trial & error also. I spent almost 3 years trying to do it all(clown, magic show, balloons & face painting). I didn't even know there was training & thought the Snaz Photo was it & only for the "greats". I knew nothing of youtube or how big face painting was till about 1 1/2 yrs ago. I'm so glad I found the forum last year! It's challenged me to be the best I can be!

The cool thing about doing the trial and error method is that I have in my head other 'alternate' sponging techniques, many of which have been resurrected to create different effects...only now, they create the effects I WANT. I woudn't have that if I were given it all in one go. Of course, I do better by teaching myself and building off of what I'm taught...I think it's a prerequisite for artistic stretching.

Guess we're in the same boat because I too have learned via trial & error and just looking through the Snaz photos (submitted a few myself to various contest - rcvd honorable mention which I was proud of). And found Heather B (from Sillyfarm) yt videos very helpful.
