Hi all, I would like to know how to watermark photo's. I have GIMP that I downloaded from the net for free. I have tried through this programe with out success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Watermark your pics
I can talk you through Photoshop/Photoshop Elements... but I don't know GIMP - I will talk a look at it and see if I can tell.

Re: Watermark your pics
Make a new layer on top of the original. (Photoshop, GIMP, Ms Paint any of those) Type what you want, then change the opacity of the type layer. Flatten the image into one layer and save as a JPEG.
Make sure you save this as a COPY or you will water mark your original picture which may or may not be your intent.
On your site, if you make your picture a background image VIA Css, and then place the watermark on top of it as a transparent TIFF- if anyone tries to swipe the picture by right clicking and saving as, all they will get is the water mark... not even a picture with a water mark. It can be amusingly frustrating for them.

HA! Can you imagine someone spending an hour "borrowing" pictures to use, and then finding out they just have a file full of water marks? That would be awesome
I'm going to open up Photoshop in a sec...
What about water marking the corner of your photo as opposed to smack across it? Preferences?

Re: Watermark your pics
It's true, but I would crop out all/most of the background first anyway, so there wouldn't be enough (IMO) to crop out, unless they wanted to go up to their nostrils or something, which is a weird place.
I'll play around with it.

:cough:
i thought watermarking was just writing the name of your company on the photos.

Re: Watermark your pics
It is, Izzy, but there's fancy ways of doing it.
As far as making a layer separate from background... there are fairly easy ways around that. OneNote will screen clip about anything and give an image perfectly web-usable, but crappy for prints.
I don't really like the looks of words across my images, but it's a tough call.

Hi Ladies,
Just thought I would mention I'm a photoshop drop out.
I don't like the limitations on the online software like gimp so I use something call
Windows Micrographics.
You can easily download it for free and it seriously kicks arse on anything I have seen or used.
You can water mark - edit - resize - effects - everything.
I used it for some christmas photo's I took two years ago and everyone thought they were professional shots.
I'll see if I can find some I did to show you an example.
They were just a bit of fun - but the things you can do are pretty endless.

Re: Watermark your pics
Personally, I like slapping my name across the whole photo.... I've had too many swiped and cropped not to!
Also, I had one stolen from my site... it WAS watermarked, and they actually took the time to photoshop out the watermark before posting it on THEIR site.... you could see where they'd done it as it was sloppily done. But they were busted cause it was a photo of ME painted by ME at a convention with hundreds of witnesses!
There's also a program that will "cut-up" you images so when someone clicks to copy all they get is a sliver!

Picnik is an online tool you could use. You can use actually do a lot of different editing functions. It is pretty good for me. I'm not too graphic design smart. haha

Re: Watermark your pics
Personally I prefer watermarking to the side so you can still see the image, but can also tell who did it. I 'borrow' photos for inspiration but keep them on my computer and never 'share' them. I like to know who inspired me so when I come across them again either in person or online I can thank them. Those that really want to 'steal' a photo will find a way as Shannon pointed out. You could also make the resolution low enough that it wouldn't be any good to anyone if they want to use your image in print and pass it off as their own. Eventually karma will get 'em anyway
BTW...gorgeous kid Tash!

Re: Watermark your pics
If any of you have experience with photoshop, it is easy to make a script to run, that way you record it once and can do it a million times. I wish I had the software to make a video tutorial for those of you with basic photoshop skills.
