Help with common Spanish and Portugese FP phrases?
Hi everyone,
I've got 2 private parties coming up. The first one is this weekend and I've been told that most people attending speak mainly Spanish the second party next month, most of the party-goers are from Brazil and speak mainly Portuguese.
I think it may be nice to know a few of my key FP phrases in Spanish and Portuguese, I'm hoping some of you may be able to help me PRETTY PLEASE??? I have been at parties and the person who was translating left to enjoy the party and I have to stumble through the process of trying to speak with people. Embarrassing
Funny note is that my husband is half Ecuadoran, but doesn't speak Spanish at all.
I'd like to be able to say the following to little kids:
Okay, sit here.
Which one would you like, can you point to it? (meaning the designs on my board)
Close your eyes.
Look up please.
Great job! (while I'm painting and they're being nice and still)
Do you like it? (the design when I'm done)
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this request!!!
Cheryl

Re: Help with common Spanish and Portugese FP phrases?
Asi = like that ah-si
excellente = duh! lol but its easier than good job.
cual quieres? = which one do you want.
que color? = what color?
centate aqui (sen tah teh ah ki ((like the ki in kiwi) )))
mira arriba= look up me-rah ah-ri-bah
The kids that are school age will probably know english so dont worry about it too much. I deal with this all the time.

Thanks so much! Yeah, it's usually the little kids.
My pronunciation is very good, I just wanted to make sure I was using proper terms and didn't sound like an idiot.
I really appreciate the help!!

I don't know the spelling, but "marry posa" is butterfly.
My daughter did a mission trip to Costa Rica last year & brought her face paints. She was a big hit & all the girls wanted "marry posa's" & the boys wanted spiderman(he crosses all cultures as I painted him lots on Zimbabwe).

My husband is Portuguese - I could write it up if you want - bu it doesn't help with the pronunciation - the Portuguese is similar to spainish in some ways like sit here is - sienda aqui
Do you want it written how you say it - or how it's written?
Also Brazilians use different words, slang and pronunciation then the Portuguese - I speak Portuguese but no-one can understand me with my Aussie accent! lmao

How it's written would be great, thanks so much. I'm familiar with the language and it's pronunciation, just not how to phrase things. I find that Portuguese sounds a lot more like Italian in pronunciation which also has some very similar phrases.Tash wrote:My husband is Portuguese - I could write it up if you want - bu it doesn't help with the pronunciation - the Portuguese is similar to spainish in some ways like sit here is - sienda aqui

Thanks so much and if anyone out there knows the Brazilian dialect, I would much appreciate it!

It is also a good idea to know the colours. Translate words and sentences at http://babelfish.com/ or http://stars21.com/ or http://www.wordreference.com/ or http://www.spanishdict.com/ or http://www.studyspanish.com/.
They can point at the colours, but it is nice to have an idea.
And then know the words for skull/monster/skeleton (a cranium will be called all three), butterfly and tiger. Except for butterfly, they are almost the same. Good idea to bring a board with the designs they can point at.
Free language course at http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/mividaloca/ Entertaining!
And one that cost a bit here: http://www.spanish-is-easy.com/Marcus-Santamaria.html It uses the words there is almost the same in English to give you a good start. I used it for about a month before going to a facepaint cruise from Barcelona and I had little trouble understanding my costumers, asking for directions and so, plus answer back in real sentences, not something like "me go hotel..." Okay, there was one lady I didn't understand, she was talking really fast and a lot *lol*
Didn't have time to finish the course, but hope I will have someday, It is a beautiful language!

It would be a great idea for part of any Jam; a mini lanuage class, just so we can say the basics.

Re: Help with common Spanish and Portugese FP phrases?
Just wanted to say thanks for all the help on this topic. I just got a note from the lady that hired me for the party with mostly Spanish speaking guests. Her cousin is planning a birthday party and called her for my contact info.
Their grandmother told them she got a kick out of seeing me interact with the kids...especially when I did my best to speak Spanish.
The whole thing made me a little nervous since I didn't know if people would take it the wrong way that I was trying to speak Spanish, but it turns out they got it, and appreciated my effort.
I haven't needed to try out Portuguese yet, they had to reschedule!

I did a party w/ a few deaf family memebers & they loved that I knew sign language. It's hard to paint & sign though.... you have to stop painting when you "talk".

That's awesome what made you learn sign language?
Re: Help with common Spanish and Portugese FP phrases?
I have a friend that is an ASL interpreter & needed 1 more person for an adult education class to keep the class open & asked me to fill the seat. I fell in love w/ the language & ended up taking ASL 1 so I could teach a high school homeschool class at our homeschool co-op. My youngest child was very late to speech & sign language was a life saver. I also have a friend w/ 2 deaf sons & spend a lot of time communicating w/ them. My hubby took it as his language courses in college. We sign to each other when we need to talk but don't want to make noise(movies, church, etc). I'm about 60% fluent & sign better than I "read" it. It's been very helpful for the special needs events that I'm often at. I live about 50 miles from Florida School for the Deaf & Blind, so our city has a pretty large deaf community.

My daughter was a late everything (physical and speech therapy) and we learned basic signs, but I never progressed past "Please, Thank you, More, Hungry, Which one?" type phrases as therapy helped her speech.
Yeah, I can picture being able to learn it, but also imagine my head exploding trying to read signs from fluent speakers.
You're just full of cool experiences Linda!
