Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
Ok, I don't want to start the smackdown all over again... but you change your water after each person????? seriously??? when your line is an hour long with crying impatient kids being pushed by angry impatient parents and you're dumping your water and smearing soap all over your brushes between each kid... well, I don't want to be around.
Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
This is just a topic that everyone is going to differ on. My fiance and I could have a heated debate like this for hours and it would go nowhere, because we both think that we are right. He is a super germaphobe and I am not... Neither one of us is more sick than the other either... I think it is fine to have your beliefs and if it works for you while face painting then all the more power to you!!

Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
I change my water between each person. Have a large bucket of water under table and another to empty into. I use a small amount of water in two stainless steel bowls and a jar after using brush. I use one bowl while painting them rinse brush in second then put brush in jar til I need it again.
I use one sponge per person. I do double dip in my paint. Clean my hands.
And I sometimes paint children who live in third world conditions and have many health issues.Everything is cleanned when I get home.
And don't paint sores ,skin infections ,or obviously ill children.
I keep a large box of tissues and wipes to clean them up.

Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
I've painted in Africa before & I bring a snaz kit & a few extra brushes & sponges & just leave them there. This will be the 1st year in 3 yrs that I'm not going
I want to move to Swaziland & go full time missions, but I'm waiting for the kids to all grow up.

Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
I take my paints to Indonesia and paint. And dont have a problem with the hygine standards.
In many Northern Territory Indigienous communities the state of health and cleanliness is truely shocking. And what the answer to this is I don't know.
But I have no desire to not allow these children to be painted. So try to keep my side of things clean as posible. These children often dont get much in their lives.

Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
That is exactly how I feel. When I go to Africa I pack as little for me as possible because I want to bring as much for the kids as possible. I usually go to salvation army(thrift store) & buy all my clothes that I'm going to wear & just leave them. I come back w/ some souvenirs & the clothes on my back.
I love painting the kids there. They are so happy & if they've ever been painted it's usually simple cheek art done w/ acrylics or markers & not full face designs. I love the wow factor! I do stay off the eyes because I know they may sleep w/ it on for days

Why wait till they're grown?

Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
I have to wait... my youngest is in speech & there's nothing to offer for him there. My other son dances & there are no professional dance companies there(or much ballet at all to offer). Hubby is in school & not yet keen on the idea. I know I'll end up there someday... 10-15 yrs from now. It'll be my "retirement". Short term missions till then.
Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
I agree. Bringing pleasure into these childrens lives is as important as the practical help. Their lives are so harsh compared to that of our own children.
I just take a small kit to Indonesia. Here's to spreading happiness.

Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
If you properly load your brush, you will not need to double dip:) I am a Canadian Painter, who although does not live in Alberta, does follow there health and safety regulations. It is not hard to do. I have a ton of sponges and brushes , I use 4 cups for rinsing/cleaning, one sponge per person, and I clean my hands with sanitizer between clients. I can't tell you the number of moms who notice i am a "clean" painter:) Just because there are antibacterial agents in the products, does not mean anti virus. You can still spread things. make up artists follow regulations, why shouldn't we?
Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
you all use water? I usually just put the brush in my mouth to wet it. And a little spit on a paint cake goes a long way...

Hey, I think Bec may be on to something......that's what most moms use to clean their kids anyway, right???
Re: Debate: To double dip or not?
ok. but seriously, my thoughts on this...
Yes, be as clean as you can. q tips on lips, change out water often, wash brushes as much as you can. Don't use cold sores as decoration on a leopard face.
Its great if you feel the need to be extra clean with the alcohol on your brushes yadda yadda, but i'm not sure its as helpful as you might think or as necessary. Just like there are moms out there who feel the need to sanatize every inch of the table/silverware/highchair at a restaurant, and my kids eat straight off the table, my kids get sick way less than the germ phobes kids' i know.
Every 10 or so faces, i change out my water and rinse out my brushes. I dont have enough brushes yet to have 1 per color, but I'm getting there. I have 1 cup with dirtier water and one with cleaner clearer water to do a final wipe down rinse before painting. I've never had anyone complain.
I'm just saying that you do your best to keep things sanitary, but overkill might just be wasting your time and energy and not as productive as you assume. But I'm no med student, just a mom with filthy yet healthy kids.
