Back to the Basics
So today, I was surfing the web for face painting sites with galleries (I sometimes draw inspiration from peoples color choices or such), and I came across one site the really WOW'D ( ) me! I was looking through the designs, and then it hit me. It was really all teardrops and swirls, put together in patterns. Face painting is really mostly about the basics, huh?
Re: Back to the Basics
Line work is really really important. You can make an amazing design if you know how to use your brush well. I attended a Wolfe Brother's class, and his base coats looked slopped on a lot of times. It was when he applied his line work that it make it WOW.
I do a lot of doodling on my arm with my brush. Here is one I did the other day while I was listening to an audiobook.

Re: Back to the Basics
Yep, pretty much. You've figured them out. It's like the hardest "simple" thing to master, and when you see someone do it, it looks so effortless. Kinda ticks me off, actually But at some magical moment, you get it, and they start popping off your brush. I'm much better at them than I used to be, but I still need work. I fully intend to take a class on swirls and teardrops, but any down time on a job should be used practicing.
Re: Back to the Basics
Yeah, the swirls, teardrops etc really empower you to make wonderful things.

Re: Back to the Basics
Yeah, Kathy offers classes every now and again (come to think of it I'm not sure if she taught the one I was planning on attending a few years back or hosting another artist... not that it matters here), pops up here sometimes, and I'm pretty sure will be an instructor at FABIAC this year. She has beautiful flowerdy masks.
Re: Back to the Basics
If you have good control of your brush and a good design sense you're golden. Your creativity will flow easier and confidently.
Re: Back to the Basics
I really try to make an effort to spend some time in the evenings after the kid is in bed practicing my basic strokes every night. It's my seemingly never ending quest for speed. Hey??? what movie was that from "I feel the need for speed" lol
Re: Back to the Basics
That would be Top Gun. My husband looks like Goose!
