working on tigers again

So, besides working on my skull painting.... we also worked on better tiger stripes at the workshop I went to. Problem is, we didn't really go over exactly how these V shaped things are placed so they look right. I'm not sure if I'm doing this properly at all, can I get some feedback? I"m happy enough with the cheeks I think, but the forehead looks odd to me. I know on a real tiger they go out the other way, but it looks like a sad face instead of a mean tiger face if I put them that way.

Perry, I think you are doing a great job, just remember every tiger is different.
I would add some yellow instead of having just plain orange, and why do you have white markings mixed in with the black? It is just my oppinion but I like one or the other, all black markings or all white markings.

Your markings are great and the placement is good as well!! Practice makes perrrrrrrfect!!

expression is in the eyebrows, try a 45degree slant up from the edge of the eyebrow, so they look furrowed and angry, another trick ive seen is to stipple a tad yellow over the orange as highlights on the cheeks and forehead with a stipple spounge, ive done both these ideas with very satisified results, but tigers are forever changing, the last one I did was floresant green and orange

Hmmmm, I'm at work, so I can't easily pull up an example, but I see what you mean. The cheeks look awesome. I'd say, make the center upsidedown U, a few inside it, then make your V's on each side of it.

It is more pleasing to the eye if your stripes all sort of point in to a central focal point

Definitly! I also swipe my spong (curved side) with Yellow (at the curved point), then orange, then red (at the tip)...it make it looked airbrushed!

it's definitely the forehead that I'm not happy with.... but I'm not seeing many examples that I like, even in the ones from the really good published painters.... going to have to keep experimenting until I'm happy.

Just image google "tiger" and look at an actual tiger picture, then copy

I've looked at them... the thing is that ACTUAL tiger forehead stripes are not flattering to the human face... it looks like sad eyebrows to me.

Maybe it would help if you told us what look you are trying to achieve with your tigers

well... this still isn't perfect to me, but it's better. I want a pretty but angry looking tiger... Of course, if the kids used to be happy with what I WAS doing, these are all light years beyond LOL

You see, there is an immediate difference in your design just by pointing your lines in toward the center of the face. Also angling the eye area makes more of an expression. Good Job with the changes, keep it up.
You might also consider making your light (white area) larger. If you continue the white from the muzzle up the nose and then out to the eyes, it will add even more expression to the design once your lines are in place, and it will also draw the eye to the center of the face more as well.

Wow, what a difference in your tigers! Wish mine looked like that on the third try.
You are rite, tiger forehead stripes sometimes are too flat and look awful in a design for the human face. Just remember to point the stripes towards the center of the face and they will look great. I mostly use the upside down V in the center and two lines on either side on the main color. This one wanted a red and green tiger with spots ; )

Here is a pic of a tiger mask i just did at a party yesterday, not my best i was rushed but at least you can see how i did the forhead markings, hope this helps some.

Great to see your tigers, I think they just get better the more you do.
Try different designs until you find certain aspects you like.

This is the last one I did on myself. I like to put white up the nose and then blend yellow over it.

I'm still not completely happy with mine either, but I can see I'm getting better.

I always love adding 1-3 white dots on to some of the black stripes. I don't know why, but this seems to add some zing!

Looking great though. I remember your last go at the tigers and you are really improving. Great job!

It's amazing what ONE workshop can do to open your eyes to new possibilities that just pictures never did.

Maybe try incorporating "angry eyes" that monster faces have... the krinkles on the bridge of the nose and the C shaped lines coming around the inside of the eyebrow.

ok, so just to kind of finish up on this session of working on tigers... here it is, painted on a wiggly 5 yr old.
