Re: the new "International" issue of Face Painter magazine
I just got the Feb. issue of American Face Painter- International issue. Is that the magazine you are referring to? Shannon has some pics in it - nice pics Shannon!!! Did you notice that some of the painters outlined their designs before painting them? I'm thinking they used a white eye pencil. I think that's a good idea for more detailed designs. I will be on the lookout for a white eye pencil now!

I picked up a Ben Nye paint pencil from a costume shop... same stuff as the magic cake I think, but in pencil form... I haven't used it yet as I was saving it for "special" I think, other than to try a little bit on my arm (both dry and wet, then dry and get it wet).
Lol... what am I thinking? Is it like Mom's wedding china or something?

I never heard of a ben nye paint pencil. I will look for it - thanks

I looked more closely at it when I was taking a pic of my stuff... it said MagicColor Creme Pencil, and they had it in lots of colors. And I think I remember hearing you need to freeze it before you try to use a pencil sharpener because the "lead" is too soft.

For outlining you can also use watercolour pencils. The are like normal coloured pencils, but when you put water on the colour - or the tip of the brush - it will behave like watercolours. And then you can have them in all the different colours you want. I normally use them for temporary tattoos only, like Celtic knot work. But think they would be fine for faces also. But not competitions - where only approved facepainting products are allowed - near eyes and on children, just to be sure.
Eyeliners/lipliners are also fine, but the other works better.

Not tried that pencil but am unimpressed with some of it...
Can I ask why you have to outline? And why in pencil? why not just with a thin line/ sheer paint and your usual brush?

Re: the new "International" issue of Face Painter magazine
There are vertually zero places to buy facepaint in Indianapolis. At Halloween, I was in a local costume shop, and discovered they keep Ben Nye MagicCakes in stock. I bought the pencil (more out of curiosity, and hoping it might help with my swirl accenting issues) and a few small pots to try it out.
By some of the step-by-steps, it looks like some people like to lay-out their design first in white outline, then paint it.

It is great with a pencil before alcohol based temporary tattoos, because you can just erase the lines after you have applied your first layer of paint =)

This pencil has a built-in sharpener which is really handy when you need a good point. It's very creamy and goes on well and then you can just paint over it. It's really good for doing cheek art when you need a lot of detail, especially for my daughter who is just learning. And the best part- it's only $1 !!

I have some trouble with symmetry so I thought a pencil might help. I also like the idea of sketching the design first. A brush works too -it's really just a preference.
Sguiggle, are you referring to the Magic Color Creme pencil being $1 or some other pencil?

No, the one on the e.l.f. website- I put a link to it in my post

If you are right handed it might help to start on the right side of the face then your hand isn't blocking when you are trying to make the left side of the face symmetrical.

I find painting the other 1/2 from behind helps me - do my best side from the front then stand behind the kid and get them to tilt head bak to match it on the other.
