Ben Nye MagiCake Aqua Paint-How to use them? Or Should I trash them..:(
Hello everyone!
I'm here again with more questions. This time concerning the Ben Nye MagiCakes. Now I purchased a few these because 1. my local year round costume store carries them (yay for no shipping) 2. because of the vast and vibrant array colors, and 3. out of curiosity of course. They also were lovely enough to give me an artist discount so they were like 6 bucks each. It wasn't until I got home to practice with them that I realized how difficult they are to paint with. It actually slowed me downed at a gig. They need so much water!! I even followed an artist advice and tried to slightly soak them before a gig. This seemed to work, but I noticed that those designs started looking flaky..they were cracking..and some peeled off
Haven't touched them since..
Any advice on how or when to use them? Or trash them..
Thanks:D

basically says you have to re-dip continuously because it dries out quick.

great example of how to use it.

Thank you.
I'll definitely be giving this technique a try, and hopefully I won't have to trash them.

I tried them... hated them because of that exact reason. But luckily someone else wanted them so we traded. Not worth the hassle... IMO
Too bad as the colours were gorgeous.

I was surprised how well the black went on with lollipop applicator. I dipped the applicator in water and loaded it until it wasn't "wet" any more and it went on forever. I swear I did my whole arm with that one swab. I would definately save them for sticky weather or sell them to me. :-) I think they would be great for body painting too as they are more rub and sweat resistent.

Have you tried making a dipping hole in the center all the way to the bottom of the paint's pot. Fill it with water. Pick up paint from the inside edge of the dipping hole. This worked with some of the colors.

Linter eating. I'm going to try the techniques you guys have given me and let you know how it's working. Hopefully they do find a purpose because as the colors are amazing.
Denise that's why I bought them because the advertising posters for the brand are all of girls with full body painted clothes on. I would have never guessed that the texture I ended up with was of the same product.
Maybe it's the applicator?

I think it's actually better for bases than line work but I wanted something I could use with Starblends for line work that wouldn't sweat off. Try it with a sponge, it can handle a lot of water so you can dip the edge in water and lather it up good and then see how far it will go. Lollipops are those oversized eye shadow sticks that Metina sells in the shop about 1" across and that's what I used. I wouldn't give up on them. Maybe just save them for hot weather.
