Re: Avatar Movie
Mandi, the photoshop work is so cool! Shannon, if you are into si-fi this is the movie to see. It's fast action, almost too fast in many areas.
A si-fi fan myself and wildlife artist, I finally saw it in IMAX yesterday, noticing so many more facinating things about the movie! :(Imax was booked, so I saw it four times previously on the other screen)
Since Jim Cameron is also an artist, the sea life influence in his designs for the foliage & critters was amazing, like the black smoker worms that became the red plants that hid when touched, obviously the Hammerhead rhino like critters & jellyfish like "seeds", but yesterday I noticed the "gills" on the cow hipped Dire Horses, and how the Na'vi white spots glow at night like the naturally illuminated plants and their skin colors are perfect camoflague.
His Banchees & Toruk annoyed me for some reason and found out why - they have not reptile, but fish mouthparts! Jim has an awesome imagination creating Pandora & inhabitants! This movie is a must on the big screen to get the full effect and, seeing it once on Imax was not enuf for me!

Re: Avatar Movie
Funny about photoshop... My daughter yelled at me the other night when I had one of my fp pictures up in it.
"MOM! That's cheating!"
"Honey, I'm not changing my design... I didn't paint there and I'm removing my pimple."

Re: Avatar Movie
To this day I've never told my husband this...but, since we met through a dating service, the first time he saw me was a photo I'd emailed him and I'd photoshopped my eyes to be just a bit brighter blue Hee hee.

Re: Avatar Movie
I saw a clip on how they made the movie, WOW. None of the characters were painted....They did have the dots on them though, and the "paint" that we see is actually on another medium that is laid over the actors, something like they do with green or blue back. I want to see more on that, because it was truly amazing.

Know what you mean re the sealife - I was a biologist and did get a bit distracted I-D-ing all the deep sea creatures they had made into aliens. Think they just got a National Geographic underwater robot-made film and copied them!
Amazing though.
And yes any competition will disqualify any face/ body paint with photoshop in it although there are many that run concurrent photo/ photoshop comps like at the World's in Seeboden.

Re: Avatar Movie
Here are some pictures (if I attach them correctly) of the Na'vi characters that Z and I created at the East Coast convention. Z spent nearly 4 hours sewing artificial hair onto clips and then braiding them into Alayna's hair (with some help from Sheryl Nance-Durst). My friend Kara Andrews sewed the "loin cloths" for both Alayna and Dustin. I also got some help from Pashur and Kat Beringer with the base coat. It really was a team effort. Soooo much fun. All of the jewelry you see was hand made by me (This was my first time making jewelry and I was really thrilled with how it turned out). For those who are curious, I created the wide prosthetic nose and covered the eyebrows on Alayna using Wolfe FX silicone. The ears on Alayna are Woochie latex "Large Vampire" ears that I trimmed and altered to appear more like the Avatar ears. I used a wooden bead for the "earring" and secured it all with Pros-Aide cream. The body painting makeup was Kryolan (light blue?) #587 for the base and a combination of Wolfe dark blue and Metallic blue for the stripes. Wolfe White mixed with a hint of blue for the dots and then I added a bit of MAC Reflects Pearl glitter to the dots just to make them "glow".
Anyway, I wanted to say that although the project took approximately 5 hours to complete the two characters, I barely noticed the time passing by because not only was this a fun project in and of itself, it was more fun because I was fortunate to do it with some of my closest friends.
More photos can be seen on my Facebook page.

Re: Avatar Movie
I finally had the chance to see the movie tonight (my kids took me for my birthday) and I was so impressed by this movie! I didn't see what all the fuss was about with creating avatar face paintings but now I do!
Re: Avatar Movie
I was so inspired by the movie that I've been wanting to try out an eye design and mask with definate Avatar influence but safe from copyrite issues.
I got the inspiration months ago when I saw a millisecond view of the Trudy, the helicopter pilot, who was the only human to wear Na'vi war paint. A few weeks ago, noticed in a preview I could pause, that she also painted her fighting chopper in war paint, too! I only had an teeny one inch square photo until Maggie Spaloss worked her photo skills to enhance it for me to work from.
Loved this scene "You aren't the only one with guns, *itch!" Spunky heroine!
His mask is kinda like a Hero-type mask & intended to be a full mask but here I just wanted to try it out halfway with Snaz Electric Blue & Sparkling Turquoise on a 3/4" double loaded brush. The mask shape will be a flaming tribal on a live model. Painting on manakins does have it's issues, but a great way to try out a design!
Happy Painting,
Susan

Re: Avatar Movie
OK so I am the lead artist at the Hong Kong Rugby 7s, the international tournament (they say HK is the biggest party on the tour of it). 70,000 come, mainly in costumes and the last 4 yrs I spend most mornings painting as many bodies as fast as I can for charity (tho I do get paid). Mostly they email me & book in in advance so I can have the right paints etc/ advise them on accessories.
So this yr 1 bunch of 5 wanted to be red avatars with white HK (on their flag) flowers. Not allowed to shade them (would have made pink!) so looked strange.um. And everyone thought they were tigers but hey. Then 1 guy wanted to be a blue avatar....as suggested he had de-haired his ENTIRE body (he was hairy!) and made his accessories - tribal jewellery, bough a wig, ears and made a skirt. Even dyed his undies & shoes!
So be aware this is in about 90 mins work and is NOT great quality- we have huge queues so I whack out these bodies fast as I can (they generally get drenched in beer/ rubbed by the crowds pretty fast!) and get back to painting faces. I'm so proud of him though - he didn't smoke all day as he had crowds of kids following him, and he kept his temper with having to pose for photo ever few steps - took him over 2 hours to walk from where we painted him to the south stand (usually takes 5 mins!) becuase of people wanting photos.
Wasn't he just perfect for it tho? Nice and tall and not too tubby!

Re: Avatar Movie
Awesome! I kinda resent that all the Avatars had amazing bodies...not one overweight in the whole society. Makes it tough for us to replicate back here on earth Lucky you finding such a lean candidate. I'm going to have to troll the local gym.
