Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Hey there - just wondering if anyone else was suprised/ alarmed by the amount of parabens in the FAB paint - i'm guessing superstar is the same???
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Maybe you could give some more information?
Where did you find numbers of an alarming amount of parabens?

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Yes - 5 different parabens, Snaz has one or maybe two?? correct me if i'm wrong - i don't have any snaz with me. FAB contains Methyl, Ethyl, Butyl, Propyl and Isopropyl parabens. these all have limits on amounts but no limits on how many can be combined. There is significant evidence around how parabens can interfere with hormone regularity which in turn as links to breast cancer. Makes me think about whether to buy any more.
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
I've read a lot about this, but haven't found 'significant evidence' for parabens interfering with hormone regularity or causing breastcancer. And I've read a lot about it, since I'm fighting this myself at the moment!
There have been many researches about food, parabens etc, causing cancer, but still no prove! Other researches say the opposite.
For me... I don't smoke, drink, have no overweight, practise enough, eat healthy (everything fresh) etc etc. I'm painting since two years, yet my cancer was there for maybe 7-8 years....
There's still no prove, what causes cancer, I think it may be a genetic matter, although my (hormonal) cancer seems to be not hereditary.

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Yeah - there are so many causes of/ links to cancer now. Life pretty much causes it! For me I don't feel good about using it on my kids so I can't use it on others either. My mum has recently had a battle with breast cancer so i guess this makes me want to try where I can. But we all make our decisions about what we will and won't do in regards to these things. Healthy lifestyle is definitely the major positive factor - like you say Lizzie
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Aholly, thanks for the info, I am one of those, better safe than sorry, organic, fresh blahblah people, lol, I will stay away from it, , phew, one brand I dont have to try, THANKS!
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
You'd best not use any Mehron Paradise either then, that contains four out of the five.
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Not worried I read the research and alot more and agree with lizzie.
add to that that that.
blueberrys, mango, vanilla, carrots, onions, strawberrys, cucumbers, peaches, blackcurrent, barley, olive, mangos ah short list plants have parabens naturally occouring in them.
Paraben is short for: para-hydroxybenzoic acid, the most abundant and widely distributed aromatic organic acid in the vegetable kingdom All higher plants require particular forms of "parabens" such as methylparaben or propylparaben in order to breathe, reproduce and defend themselves from microbes.
So basically unless you stop eating fruit and veg... you are getting parabens

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Don't get me wrong, the moment there's proof for all this, I'll be the first to quit using the product, whatever it may be!
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
oh, I see, naturally occurring parabens are in the paints that have more plant derivatives?
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
I would still love to hear where it said here are five parabens in Superstar...
Could you give me that link Aholly?

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Yup, all those parabens are in fruit and veggies. And we eat those. We don't eat paint....at least, not most people.
I have a Superstar pale yellow in front of me right now, and it has 4 parabens, same as Paradise. It's the old type (i.e. scented) so it's possible the newer cakes may have 5, but I can't check for sure right now.
EDITED TO ADD: I did check a newer Superstar paint - a white. Still 4, not 5.

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
I think the issue is NOT so much do they/ don't they- at least not at this second.... It's that the PUBLIC perception is that they are bad. So.... there are people who won't use anything with parabens in them (Just like there are those who won't use flouride toothpastes because of the aresenic, eat shellfish because of the mercury, etc etc etc)
So.... if public perception grows that parabens are "bad" weather it is true or not, at that point it will be wise to seek paints without them for that reason.... In the meanwhile.... I don't care one way or another but YES if public perception swaed harshly that way, I would seek products without them.

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
It's hard to say, there are certainly studies linking parabens to hormone disruption in animal studies. Linkage is not the same thing as cause an effect. Correlation is not causation. Whether or not those studies replicate exposure levels in humans is hard to determine. You need to be as informed as you can be to make decisions that are wise for you and your health.

These studies are a jumping-off point for more research if you're interested. Public perception is often swayed by psuedoscience, but real science itself is often hard to interpret and can be hard to apply to daily life. Currently these products are approved for use in cosmetics and and foods and drugs. Despite the FDA's shortcomings, they do continually review studies to insure continued safety in their recommendations.

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Slightly off-topic, but my fave way of explaining the difference between correlation and causation is to point out that a direct correlation exists between the number of pirates sailing the seas, and global warming.
Obviously the answer to climate change is to have more pirates. Arrrrrrrr!

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
I wouldn't worry about painting anyone with them. If it's true, what it can do, it would be like other cancer causing agent....that you'd have to have a LOT of continuous contact for it even to affect you. No harm is going to be done by someone who gets their face painted once in a while. On the other hand, if you're worried for YOURSELF, then of course, stop using them or, if you really like certain colors, you can always wear those dr. type vinyl thin gloves. But easier to just not use them or use them just once in a while or with brushes rather than sponges, so it doesn't get on your hands constantly. I wouldn't view it as a danger myself...not enough contact to do harm, in my humble opinion!
Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
I use lots of Superstar, and love it. I'm also a qualified holistic therapist, so not completely ignorant of health and safety issues. Each to their own, however - everyone should get educated and make up their own minds.

Re: Parabens in FAB/ Superstar??
Parabens are preservatives to help keep your face paints fungal and bacteria free, or greatly reduced.
The was a big concern about parabens but scientific studies have shown otherwise. The concern with Parabens have more to do with food than cosmetics. Inregards to food there are concerns with methyl and propylparaben which the FDA has labeled as GRAS, which means they are Generally Regarded As Safe. Both the FDA and EU has regulated parabens as safe in cosmetics.
It is good to be alert. And always keeping an eye on what we use.
