Re: Canadian Memebers
Alas!
I am a fake Canadian.
I hail from Detroit, Michigan.
I went to 8th Grade in Garland, Texas.
That is where I learned my French.
Je suis un stylo.
Le chimpanzee es sur la table.
I now reside in the Bloor West Village area of Toronto.

Re: Canadian Memebers
My mother married a Canadian.
I married a Canadian.
I gave birth to three Canadians.
They all played on the same hockey team, on the same line at one point.
I am just SO glad that the two who play the goalie position were not wearing their goalie skates on their way into this world.
Um, I thought they were teaching me to order "champagne at this table, please." Every time I speak French in Montreal, everyone immediately begins to speak Anglais, and I NEVER get champagne.

I'm Canadian... more Canadian than Lisa, but, unfortunately have never played hockey, I can't even skate.
Both parents are Canadian born, half of the grandparents are Canadian born... some of the family has actually been here since the 1700s.
I am originally from the Vancouver area, but moved waaaay up north on January 19th 2000... it was a nice drive, clear, cold, mostly good roads, a full moon to light the last 6 hours of driving... the glowing eyes of the moose along the highway staring out at us as we left BC behind for the wilds of northern Alberta.
And every time I have tried to use my high school French in Paris, they laugh and hand me an English menu.

Re: Canadian Memebers
But, do YOU ever get champagne?
'Cause I MUST be doing something wrong with my French inflection.

Re: Canadian Memebers
I've never got champagne but then again, I've never ordered it.
I did get Grand Marnier on the crepes at the Louvre though, does that count?

Re: Canadian Memebers
I would say so!
Um, I think I am missing the whole point of this column...
Isn't this to gather all of us Canadian dwellers together?
I do not think this is a showcase for my fabulous French accent.

Re: Canadian Memebers
Okay,
I am confused.
Jessica: Georgetown:
BORN & RAISED
Sarah: St. Catharines:
RAISED & PROUD
Is there a difference between the nuances that I am missing, like the NOT being able to order champagne at my table by entreating Montreal servers "Le chimpanzee et sur la table?"

Re: Canadian Memebers
Ewwwww - thanks for that nasty thought Lisa LOL!!
I lived in TO 'til I was 5, then we lived in Edmonton for 8 years, back to Mississauga for my teen years, and my husband and I live in the Hammer now.
Lisa - all three kids on the same line?!?! That's awesome! My oldest son plays AA, my middle son plays select. Between the two of them we were at the arena 6 times last weekend (fri-sun) one of those times was for a game in London. I am sooooo jealous that you get all three done in one shot Thankfully, my youngest son just gave up hockey for gymnastics which is only once a week, and my daughter only dances once a week as well. Hmmm, maybe I should start practicing my face painting really really hard so that I can become a pro. B-day parties painting faces on weekends sounds soooo much more fun than freezing my derriere (do you like my french word?) off in the rink!
Sarah - we're practically neighbours
Shannon - I get laughed at everytime I try to speak french too - maybe the problem is that I start with champagne and THEN try to parle francais!

Re: Canadian Memebers
I am in Calgary, Born and raised in Canada eh. I am originally from BC- Chilliwack in the beautiful Fraser Valley to be exact. I met my first husband in BC, and we moved to Calgary in 87. We moved to a small farming town for a few years ( I hated it, not a country kid), then after I got divorced I came back to Calgary to finish my education, and have been here for the last 12 years! I love the city for the most, and consider myself an Albertan. I married an Albertan 3.5 years ago and we are thinking maybe in the next 5 years, we might head to BC as my whole family is there. - Kelowna area hopefully. My oldest moved to BC, and my youngest is still here finishing school. She is a teen Mom and doing a magnificent job with her baby and her school. Being a Nana is my most important job right now - I love it!!
Re: Canadian Memebers
I've crossed the border many, many times....
I come from a kooky, crazy mixture of Native American and French Canadian - and somehow somebody threw some German into the pot.
My name is French...
But most importantly - I loves me my Canadian face paint friends!

Hey Christina we are neighbours! How neat is that? Although I did sit for a second and go "where the heck is Hammer?" then realized you said the Hammer totally caught up to you now.

I am Canadian, Anglo Montrealer but uprooted to Switzerland at the moment. . I have to speak French on a daily basis but in a snooty European accent rather than the cool QC one. Do I count?

Re: Canadian Memebers
I'm born and raised in BC, living on the 'wet'coast east of Vancouver, in a little town called Mission. But I claim Norwegian heritage as that is where my papa is from and I love it so much there. BC is a lot like Norway actually
Shannon's right about the Canadian pin thing...when I was travelling Europe many years ago, someone asked if I was American, and when I said 'Canadian' he said "That's alright, then" LOL
