Preschool Desings
I have a gig at a preschool this weekend. I am looking for designs that aren't on the eyes since young kids are touchy about painting over their eyes. However, our business is know for full face work- not cheek art. So I don't want to be doing "cheeky" things. Any one got some ideas?
Re: Preschool Desings
I don't have much trouble painting on little ones' eyes and at least half of my work is with preschoolers. The things to remember with preschoolers are 1. do it fast and 2. it isn't going to be perfect.
this is a board of quick designs that I threw together specifically for a preschool event because there were a lot of kids and I wanted the line to move quickly.

Re: Preschool Desings
I've done preschool/kinder plenty of times. I find that as long as you use a sponge around the eyes the "hard squinting" stops
Re: Preschool Desings
How... HOW did you paint more than a child a minute even with simple designs!?! I am in awe.
Some of those don't look *that* simple to me I totally suck at soccer balls and scorpions.

Re: Preschool Desings
I CRINGE at the request of a soccer ball.... ugh, not hexagons!!! I can't even draw those stupid things on a big piece of paper!!!
Re: Preschool Desings
I actually didn't get a request for a soccer ball that day. To be honest with you my work sucked that day but the kids were happy so I was happy. I can get that tribal dragon done in about 30 seconds. I feel soooo guilty when birthday party kids ask for it. But a lot of tween boys ask for it so I try to "glam" it up a bit. Out of the 160 kids honest I did over 145 of them in the tribal dragon and flower masks. The rest were scorpions heart crowns and rainbow princesses I did 2 snakes about 5 skulls 1 spider 1 peace sign. So I got my speed way up with those designs.
Re: Preschool Desings
I tend to paint younger kids on their arms because they like to see it and it's not so traumatic to wash off. I can make the squirmiest kid stop being afraid by painting on my arm and then they will stop and watch and let me do it. Younger kids (boys and girls) tend to LOVE rainbow anything. I think you could make a swirly rainbow with glitter and they'd stare at it all day.
I haven't done a pre-school full of them, but I wonder if you couldn't come up with specific one stroke arm designs like snakes, dragons, sharks, dolphins, animal print cuffs, spider and web...for girls (and boys if they want) rainbow or one-strokes with blossoms, butterflies, little filbert hearts, little roses, swirls, cheetah spots.
I hate cheek art too, especially trying to do line work on a younger child...that's why I love one-stroke stuff so you can just add a little bit of an outline for the face or teeth and avoid completely outlining.
Oh, I forgot about the "talking" animals that can be done on the arm too. I was playing with the idea at the 4th of July. I'll attach a few photos. You can do the simplest animals like zebras and ducks and they'd love the animation.
This on an arm:
And of course Wonderful Wuppies (this is one of l!zzie's wonderful ones) You'd have to paint the eyes but they would still be darling:

Here's a link with a slideshow on it of simple hand animals:

I sketched out a few. This is quite fun to think of different animals that can work. I think my favorite is the duck. Sorry the quality is so low, I was just sketching so my black is bleeding a lot.
Re: Preschool Desings
Denise, children will loooove it! My son's favourite is the shark, so I think I'll try it!

Denise -
This is BRILLIANT! I love the duck, dolphin, and shark ideas. Mind if I stick em in my inspiration folder?

Re: Preschool Desings
Of course not, Tamariel... The dragon was a popular one. I put the red in the mouth first before and had him keep his hand open so it would be dry when I put the teeth in. Like I said, I'm sure the other's would look better if I used the right color cake and took some time to load properly. My regular paints were packed up and I was lazy.
I like the hand tattoos for their simplicity. They would be great line busters and you could use BAM's with them to add that texture that he's got going. I can't do it on my own hand though...but you get the idea.

Re: Preschool Desings
Thanks for posting! Sometimes I need a split sescond design like these and draw a blank and paint something simple like a ball, spider or web. Although the kids seem happy I bet they would be extremely delighted to get one of your designs!
Re: Preschool Desings
Many of my designs on my website were done on pre-schoolers.... all were very patient while getting painted.
If you have a design that requires paint near the eyes; first of all, you can keep the paint at least a half inch away from their eyes and still not lose the effect of your design. Secondly, talk the child through every little step and it helps them... i.e., "I'm going to touch your face with the brush/sponge now."

Things I've learned to do w/preschoolers:
1-TRY to talk 'em into an arm design that they "can see".
If Not:
2- Ask them to close their eyes if they keep swiveling their heads. they'll move less.
3- Star blends, especially around boys eyes.
4- Since I was asked not to paint on hands @ last preschool (they wash them frequently), Denise's GREAT designs work well on the mouth & up the cheek.
5- Like Miss Ronnie, I talk them thru it, this way...(Important if eyes are closed) say "It's going to feel cold & wet right here" & I touch w/my finger 1st.
6- On the little ones that insist on "Spidey", I minimize the lines & ask them to count with me. Even having them count while you flick lines for a starburst makes them smile.
Hopes this helps!
