I'm kind of curious how other people go about cleaning their sponges.

What I do is give them a thorough wash in hot, soapy water and then pop them in the microwave for a couple minutes. I just learned about the microwaving thing a few months ago, so I'm wondering who else is aware of how good it is at sterilizing sponges!

Since I can't post links yet (new user!), I'll post one of the articles about it here:

Microwave Kills Germs in Sponges
Microwave Can Sterilize Kitchen Sponges and Plastic Scrubbing Pads, Study Shows

Jan. 24, 2007 -- Your microwave may be a powerful weapon in protecting your family against disease-causing germs.

A new study shows zapping sponges and plastic scrubbing pads in the microwave can kill bacteria, such as E. coli, that can cause illness.

"Basically, what we find is that we could knock out most bacteria in two minutes," says researcher Gabriel Bitton, professor of environmental engineering at the University of Florida, in a news release. "People often put their sponges and scrubbers in the dishwasher, but if they really want to decontaminate them and not just clean them, they should use the microwave."

Researchers say disease-causing bacteria and germs from uncooked eggs, meat, and vegetables often work their way onto countertops and cleaning tools, and the dampness of sponges, dish cloths, and scrubbers provide an ideal breeding ground for the bugs.
Microwave Sterilizes Sponges

In the study, published in the Journal of Environmental Health, researchers evaluated the effects of zapping sponges and plastic scrubbing pads in the microwave on bacteria and viruses.

The sponges and scrubbing pads were soaked in wastewater containing a dangerous mix of fecal bacteria, E. coli, and bacterial spores. Bacterial spores are more difficult to kill.

The results showed that two minutes in the microwave at full power killed or inactivated more than 99% of all the living germs and the bacterial spores in the sponges and pads, including E. coli.

After an additional two minutes -- a total of four -- none of the bacterial spores survived.

Before you zap your sponges in the microwave, researchers offer the following advice:

Microwave only sponges or plastic scrubbers that do not contain steel or other metals.
Make sure the sponge or scrubber is wet, not dry.
Two minutes should be enough to kill most disease-causing germs.
Be careful in removing the sponge from the microwave because it will be hot and should not be handled immediately after zapping.

Bitton recommends that people microwave their sponges according to how often they cook, with every other day being a good rule of thumb.

Good idea. I usually just toss them in the washer and dryer. I'm nervous about the microwave after my last experiment- actually BROKE the microwave.

I fear the glitter within them would blow up my microwave!!!!!

I put my sponges out in the sun UV light kils just about any thing after 12 hours considering that I have been known to not take in my washing for days I feel they are safe. they us uv filters to kill ecoli in some water filters and purify ecoli infested water in 3rd world countries with UV light. UV kills lots of things.bacteria, fungus, viuses etc. I know that fungas i.e.candida can be killed by UV of extreme boiling and most baby steralisers don't do it - the peadiatrcian told me that after an oral thrush with the baby that kept comming back. it is a pain to kill.

If its raining they go in the dryer with the school/work uniforms. again a full cycle for 45 mins kills stuff. as they go in as part of the load they get about 1hour and 15 mins.
I love my microwave too much, she likes to be told she is a good girl and she suffers from a life threatening, glitter allegy -poor dear.

paint. Caught the whole thing on fire. Someone suggested that glitter was the culprit, but I don't know how since I don't use metal glitter, it's polyester. I knew about microwaving your dish sponge, but never thought of it for the FP sponges. I couldn't possibly melt them could I? I'm extremely good at disasters...

Polyester is highly flamable!!! that is one of the reasons they use polyester blends in clothing.

I didn't know about the dish sponge thing though and there are times I hate waiting hours for a cloth etc.

So I guess if you use glitter on your sponges, the microwave is a no-no!

It was the glitter then. (balme it on the glitter and not the fact that I just turned the knob and totally forgot about it!) I usually toss my sponge bag in the dryer, but that's on the fritz so I might have to use the microwave trick this weekend. My husband would be SO mad if I catch this one on fire too- fingers crossed for me.

If the amount of UV light in sunlight killed germs there would be no germs outdoors, transmittable diseases would die when exposed...

I was just reading about UV lamps being used for sterilization and the article mentioned: "However, since microorganisms can be shielded from ultraviolet light in small cracks and other shaded areas, these lamps are used only as a supplement to other sterilization techniques."

So perhaps UV is only good at cleaning water in clear bottles, as opposed to dense sponges? All I can find is info on using UV to treat water...

There is also a difference between sanitation and sterilization - we do sanitation vs medical (surgery) sterilization..... I'm not sure my brushes would survive an autoclave....

I would absolutely blame the glitter, especially to your husband (and after doing so I would be careful not to let him see you put sponges in microwave!!!)
The article I linked just says that Its flammable but the proses but which it combusts is called Vulcanisation (as in the Greek or Roman god of fire)
And I don’t put glitter on my sponges. But I never put it on my cat, the floor, the car, or the lounge either - yet they all sparkle like Edward. So I am guessing it would probably be on the sponges
-------------------
As for the UV thing I come from the country. I lived in the one of the driest parts of Australia in our worst drought. We had servere water shortage my family lived on a total of 5000 gallons of drinking water in 2002. We had a dam water infested with various cryptosporidium and ecolli. The water board came out to give us seminars on how UV kills these things. As we had to wash our clothes in them and the population was as a whole very concerned about the children.
They also taught us in case we got stuck how to turn stagnant water infeated with ecolli into drinking water as it was about 70km to 200km between houses and if you got stuck you could be in serious trouble. It is to do with maximum exposure to sunlight as in no shade etc. I have a spot where this is possible plus we have a high UV index in Australia.
It dose it buy by DNA damage. UV disrupts and/or modifies the DNA. This errors destroy the blueprint on how to build the bacterial genes and thus various functions of genes and proteins can not be run in the usual way.
It basically kills the ability to reproduce itself why it takes time. In labs they can do it in 5 sec due to potency of light in the world at large they recommend 12 total hour I go with 3 days to be sure.

and this although not entirely accurate is sort of user friendly

Noella - looked at the sodis method that is one of the things we did but we were told 10 hours to be sure.
although that could be the government Covering there behind at the time. and it dose work people only really got sick if they got impaitent and didn't leave it.

The question shannon asked was asked by parants and they told us to think of it like this at the time (well somthing like this)
why are there germs?
why it dosn't work in nature is there- is ability to escape. If UV didn't kill germs the world would at the rate they reproduce be literally be overrun by them.and not much else would exsist.

And they do!

Ever see a vulture with it's wings outstretched? Part of the reason is that the UV light kills surface bacteria on the feathers.
