New to Body Painting
Hi!
I'm new to body painting. I know there are paints available to buy and using it with my airbrush, but I want to know if there is a way to make my own paint. I'd like to make my paint with the colors I want. Could you please tell me which are the directions and the materials I should use?
Best Regards,
Futurist

Re: New to Body Painting
You could also just use the colours for facepainting, and brush and sponge. That is what I normally do =)
But for airbrush, why not use what is available? There are so many and as long as it is liquid enough to go through and airbrush (and is safe for the body) they are fine. You can always mix the colours, to get the one you want.

Re: New to Body Painting
But I want to make it by myself!!! Isn't it cheaper?

Re: New to Body Painting
Make it from what? Pigments are expensive. i think the cheapest way is brush/sponge. Both with products, but also equipment.

Re: New to Body Painting
Too much trouble for my taste I did something like that for making fake blood, since I could not get any with the right colour, but it takes time to mix. How much is your time worth?
But looking forward to see the result with your home made colours

Re: New to Body Painting
TO be honest, I actually don't think it would be cheaper to make it yourself - as is often true with cosmetic products. Buying the quantities of FDA-compliant materials that suppliers would require would definitely eat into any profit margin, and the time it would require to mix and make everything would eat into your worktime (further eating into your profit).
I'd also check with your insurance company - I'm sure many wouldn't approve of the use of home-made products.
I'm with Lone Wolf. Go with what's out there - I'm fairly certain you'll save money in the long run, you'll definitely save time, and you know that whatever you use with be safe, which is really the most important thing.
Good luck in finding what you need.

Re: New to Body Painting
FYI, I just looked at that eHOW article, and they are recommending ACRYLICS as a base product.
Seriously, just buy the safe products that you need from reputable makeup suppliers. Don't risk your clients health, and safe yourself the headache of subjecting yourself to liability.

Re: New to Body Painting
Which products do you recommend for Body Painting, which are the best? which are the cheapest? I'm living in Europe, but I haven't had the chance to identify differences between paints. Could you please help me?!!!
Thanks in advance....

Re: New to Body Painting
If you are looking to save $$$$ you can use the Ben Nye liquid paints in a ration of 3 parts water to 1 part paint and mix your own colors accordingly as well. Here, I bought a small 2 oz. bottle for like $5.50 at my local mega theatre costume shop. I have heard of others also using the creams like Fardel and mixing with water. Then you can also mix using setting or fix liquid instead of or in addition to your "water" part of the formula to give your work more staying power.
Most of the reputable brands like Mehron and Kryolan (and there are more out there!!! of course) sell ready-to-use premixed airbrush ready paints. For body painting most use water based. If you are tattooing then that is another paint that is alcohol based and has a longer life on the skin 3 to 7 days depending on skin, placement, climate, and client care.

I really like Kryolan for airbrush, but not their yellow, so have just bought some of the new Mehron Lux, but did not have had the time to try it
Temptu also makes some nice products!

Re: New to Body Painting
Fururist,
While we can offer all the advice in the world, some hands on training would really help you "understand" some of what we are saying. It is one thing to say how to do it, but another to show.
While you are learning, I would highly suggest going to youtube.com and viewing lots of the face painting videos. This is how I started. I watched several over and over and then painted. All before my first class.
Where are you in Europe. Maybe someone on the forum can suggest training as well.

Re: New to Body Painting
As written in my first post on this page: I use brush and sponge normally, not airbrush.
The Kryolan 75 ml in enough if you want to cover a whole model (normal female) in one colour.

Metina:
I just want to know about paints, trademarks, steps if you use liquid or cake paints, places to buy. Just that. Training, I think practice gives you everything. I'm in Spain.
LoneWolf:
The Kryolan you are telling is the one in this link?

Re: New to Body Painting
No. But they do have liquids as well which you might be able to dilute. Fantasy Worldwide (also Belgium) makes creams and liquids too - and I THINK they might do an airbrush formula (you could check.)
For Airbrush I use Dinair Airbrush Make-up. It is water based and pretty nice to use. Not sure if is available in Europe as the company is based in North Hollywood.

Re: New to Body Painting
That's craft paint, not body/face paint. If you are wanting to paint something on paper, I'm sure it would be fine.
Re: New to Body Painting
Futurist,
Please use only ready mixed airbrush or liquid paint that you dilute from a reputable name brand manufacturer.
= Personally I would definitely not put yourself through the agony of trying to take a solid/dray water activated "cake" makeup and mixing with water to get the right consistency - your time is worth something......
= You really don't want to put a poor quality or unsafe product into a good airbrush system ($600 to $2000 or more here!) Your $3 paint or homemade concoction would likely cause your expensive system or guns to clog and you may end up with poor results or worse (rashes!) on your customers.
Some suggestions if you can find them; Kryolan Airstream premixed ready to use, Mehron Luxe for airbrush or Mehron Liquid, Makeup, Ben Nye Magicolor Liquid, Graftobian Airbrush Liquid, Australian Body Art, and many more...... perhaps the european facepaintchat forum may have some posts already on this subject and where they recommend purchasing from.
(I wish we were more helpful for you being in Spain - but aren't there a few reputable theatre shops and online stores who sell reasonably in Europe and UK??)
What I was saying in an earlier post was that if you want to save money use a liquid makeup from one of the top reputable manufacturers (usually $3 to $5 for a small one or two ounce bottle here) face or body paint makeup liquid and dilute it yourself to the consistency to go through the airbrush. Depending on the thickness of the liquid paints - that mix can be anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 makeup with the rest of the mixture being water or barrier/fixative liquid.
