Question about gilding Empty Question about gilding

Post by ChangingFaceDesigns Sun Sep 04, 2011 6:56 pm

I don't wish to just put glitter on the henna which will flake off, but i want to actally gild the design which will lasst a few days.
I went to hennapage.com and saw an SBS about gilding using tattoo inks glitter and something refered to as a gilding powder. I saw where you could order the tat inks and I have the glitter but didn't see and actual gilding powder perse.

Is there an actual powder or were they referring to the process itself??? Looking for clarification, because it reads as though te gilding powder is another component of the mix and then it looks like they are referring to the mixture of tat ink & glitter as being the gilding.

Thanks for the assistance

Or do you mean using gold (or other metal) leaf? I'm doing latex/gold leaf on skin to create bracelets and collars.

Oh... putting the shimmer powder ON TOP of the henna paste? Or putting shimmer powder on top of tattoo inks instead of just powdering them?

You can do both. Or you can mix with hair gel for a not so lasting result or on skin glue for a longer lasting metal tattoo. So many possibilities! http://www.hennapage.com/henna/how/gilding/

So does this mean I can take some mica shimmers and mix it into my tattoo paints and paint in the reliefs of the henna design, so when the dry henna cracks off you are left with the color and the stain? I already have tattoo inks but wasn't sure if i need to buy that particular brand to do this

Btw thank you all for responding.

I just realized that I referenced the wrong website. The site that I am actually talking about is www.mehandi.com and look under scheherazade gilding.

Sorry for the mix up, but it's nice to see other options to do this.

Shannon I did go there.... that's how I knew I was on the wrong site. The henna page doesn't depict how to do it with the tattoo paints and that's how I would like to do it so I can utilize the different colors of the tat inks.

What I am beginning to gather is that it is almost like how we mix the mehron powders into our FP to make them POP more.

Si I am going to surmise that it would be the same principle with just adding to some mica shimmer to the tat inks for that gilded look.

If I am off the mark ....please let me know

Those are mika (sp) powders and you can also use the mehron powders. The rest of the recipies work well. I love the mark reid glitters, but on bigger projects, I prefer to make my own for cost effectiveness. There are a ton of different brands. I find for me what has worked best is the mika(sp), super xtra hold hair gel, and cosmetic grade glitter. This will give you the normal one day wearability.

Now for glittering the henna, it is just shots of the glitter we already use for tats, sticks to the henna while wet, falls off and that's it. Adding glitter to your henna or inks to your paste does not really work. Only way to put color that lasts into a design is to either put some glue down after your henna is done being carful not to touch the henna then toss on some glitz, or to put down some colors and henna around those. You can sometimes get a paintbrush in there for effect, but unless it's for a photo piece project, it's very impractical for festival/party use unless you really want to do all that fussin'!

Example of henna with glitter on top:

hennapage is pretty much the beginning and end of all things henna hardcore. That does not mean there are not other places that have great info and it's an ever changing landscape as henna is an artform, a tradtion and a fashion all in one so it's always moving forward with new designs, innovations and information! Just don't believe everything you read! Internet = most fantastic info gathering tool ever invented. Also = world's largest bathroom wall and I've seen enough false, misleading, downright stupid info passed off as fact than I care to think about!! LOL

Question about gilding Empty Re: Question about gilding

Post by kat Mon Sep 05, 2011 11:53 pm

I was wondering about the glitter gilding.

How long does it last using a gel?
Would it last an afternoon - say, for a princess party for kids?
Say. their arms/wrists/etc....

I was thinking that this would be fun for girls... not to mention the thoughts of how Mark would appear with a minuscule amount threaded through his brow.... *L*

I'm joking!

Really!

Suspect

Or, from what I've read, would the drying time be too long for a tween/close to tween years to allow to dry?

I swear... I'm such a glitter (not to mention tackle) tart!
I can see me picking the rhinestones off my fellow little old ladies sweaters in the nursing home and hoarding them... *L*

ChangingFaceDesigns, thanks for the post!

Shannon, just this afternoon I was thinking that it would be fun to use those 'leaf' sheets with body glue (hadn't got as far as Latex yet) to use with them.

You know, for a few months (back in the late 80's) when designing sweatshirts was all the rage, you could use the "gloss" fabric paint, let it dry to tack and apply the 'gilding' paper...

I used to make lot's a money on those sweatshirts (55$ and up for a 5$ top, and an hour of painting - hey, I was a teen... on the upper end.... ahem) for the ladies with the lavender hair to wear. I say that with some envy.. my Grandmother used to keep her hair a beautiful shade of lavender, and made certain that her wardrobe matched accordingly... *L*

Lone, thanks for the great link!!!!

You can also apply gold leaf with vaseline, lipgloss or just damp skin. Great for a photo shot, since it will stay, but not forever.
I used that here:

Question about gilding Img_1810

I would not use glitter gel on kids (or henna), since they will probably smear it before it is dry. Especially at a party.

Hennapage does have how you can use it with alcohol based colours - they just call it resin-based colours - maybe the other sound to scary? They even use the same product - Temptu (where is that heart smiley?)
They have some nice metal shades also.

Guess you can mix in glitter as well, I have not tried it, but I have applied it (and metal powders) on top and it looks great.

Kim: always love your work! (need that heat smiley again!)

Ladies Thank you so much for all the usefull information. I now have a clearer understanding of what I can do.

Kim, I don't know what you've started...lolol but me and my kidd are hooked on henna and my mom too. I don't know why I waited so long to do this. I guess the idea of it and the history behind it can be a little daunting, coupled with wanting to be able to be good at it.
