Pick Your Nose
Wondering if anyone's bought a copy of Margi Kanter's Pick Your Nose and has any feedback on it? I'm tossing around the idea of getting it but would love to hear what you think of designs, level of difficulty etc.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Pick Your Nose
I took her class at Fabaic, AND I bought the book... The book is helpful in that it lists the paint colors, brands and brushes to use. There are 12 designs - each with 4 step by step pics and a 5th pic showing the final design. There is also a little paragraph with tips for each design as well. The designs are really easy to pick up and the kids LOVE them. The first time you show them the design in the mirror they smile, then you tell them to wiggle their noses, and they bust out laughing and run off to show all their friends.... I found that tweenage girls liked these the most.
Re: Pick Your Nose
I have been tossing around whether or not to buy the book. I wondered if the kids would really like the designs. I think they are cute on the one hand but then not so sure on the other. Since you are seeing positive reactions, CC, maybe I'll give it a go. Thanks.

Re: Pick Your Nose
I just bought it the other day and I'll do a vid review of it when it gets here this coming week.
Re: Pick Your Nose
Awesome Ashley - looking forward to that!
I didn't buy it this time around. I do have a couple of nose designs (the flying pig is surprisingly popular, lol) and I figure that the general placement is the same...love Margi's work but wonder if I couldn't just figure the listed designs out myself...hopefully the Washington conference in Sept will have a copy on hand I can flip through!
Slash, I'll watch Ashley's review

Re: Pick Your Nose
I got the book and I have to say that, while I'm no fan of nose designs, I do love the book. The designs are explained clearly and concisely. The pictures are crisp and even an novice could figure out how to execute the designs just by looking at the excellent photos. I like that she has a materials key on every page (not that I use it...I pretty much use the brush and color I want to use, but it's helpful for anyone who just wants to execute the design without experimenting). The quality of the paper and everything else i mentioned made it well worth the $14 price point. It far exceeds some of the more pricier books that SF has put out and I have no qualms about reccomending it to people.
Re: Pick Your Nose
I bought it. The lady bug, dragon and penguin where popular at my last festival. Kids like the monkey too but it takes alot of line work. I LOVED how the lady bug looks with glitter and I put in some stawberry blossoms- SO CUTE and fun to paint without taking too much time! The rest of the designs I personally didn't really find worth the book.

I was inspired by her designs and tried the concept while camping and at a 10 year old's birthday. They loved them!

Re: Pick Your Nose
I bought this and did the Panda yesterday. The book said to tell them to wiggle their eye brows which I did. The girl starting laughing. It was a big hit.

Re: Pick Your Nose
I've done nose designs that I've made up before, but never thought that they could be used as 'living' art - what fun!
Re: Pick Your Nose
This little girl is so cute. She, trying to make her design move, is funnier than the design! LOL

Liked book one so much I bought the second book as well. Keep in mind though that I LOVE having books almost as much as paint!

Re: Pick Your Nose
Hey Gang:
On New Year's Eve, I painted a teen who wanted a penguin. I decided to paint one on her nose, inspired by the "Pick Your Nose" designs I had seen. I do not own the book. The teen was smiling into the mirror, then stopped and said, "You put the crotch on the end of my nose." She was not impressed. I didn't get it. "What?" I said. She said, you put the penguins crotch right on the end of my nose. I wiped it off for her and did a winter scene instead.
The teen was right. Has anyone else noticed that the most prominent part of the nose is usually where genitalia would be, if a cartoon actually HAD genitals?
I would have never noticed until she had pointed this out to me. I have not had a gig since New Year's Eve, so I have not even had an opportunity to do a nose painting.
I know what Freud would say..."Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".
Sometimes, a face painting is just a happy little face painting is what I say!
xoxo

Re: Pick Your Nose
Anyone have a photo of Margi's panda? I have never seen it, but saw the penguin once. My little girl asked for a panda 'like the penguin' at the end of a long day of painting. After a couple hundred kids...I was exhausted...but made it up. Curious to see how close I came to the real thing? I also have a video of my girl with her design, she LOVED it...I am now seeing the value of these designs...wasn't sure at first. I'll upload the video and share it in a bit.

Re: Pick Your Nose
Gamezgirl... you are right, there is value to these designs because the kids love them! I don't have the book but have done several impromptu animals in this fashion... and it never fails; the kid looks in the mirror and always laughs!! And mine were probably terrible compared to what is in the book!
Re: Pick Your Nose
I've done this type of design for years... using the nose as the base for a design. And yes, very popular. The one's Margi's come up with are super cute - that I have seen. I don't have any plans to buy the book myself.

Re: Pick Your Nose
Shannon, you don't NEED the books woman! You WRITE the books (I have yours too). BTW, darn you! You've got me making latex wounds now! Also, any notions as to when "The Art of Face Painting" will be coming out?

It's written... just have a load of photos to process for the SBS section... so it is a time issue. I am hopeful to get it done this year. I had my computer crash, had to buy a new one but can't load my PS CS3 on to it for some reason so have to use my crashed (which still operated but takes, I kid you not, an HOUR to boot up!!) computer to do the photo layouts.

Re: Pick Your Nose
Shannon, sorry about the computer. Gotta be making you want to kick it across the room! Please post when book comes out. I'd love to get it. Your Face or Mine was one of my first books and much more useful than another I got by another well-known (won't mention names but won't be making another purchase by that author). The latex stuff BTW is messy but fun! Again, darn you!
