Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Hi, sorry, was away working for a few days!
The worst crumbly ones are the Wolfe/ DFX neons but yup some are funny in other brands too.
Some will just 'warm up' if you have bits in plastic bag/ cling film heating in your hand.
Others I more or less 'drown' in cool boiled water and leave to absorb - that often means they are fine to play with the next day.
For the really crumbly ones I sort of scrape a fair bit loose and add drops of boiled water and mix and squish until it gets to the right consistancy. Its very messy with the neon yellow in partic but I don't like the idea of nuking them as I'm not a huge fan of the odd things microwaves can do.
Oh the 1 type that are/ were a total loss crumbly-wise were several of the Paradise metallic a few years back - they would not work/get pliable whatever you did, I even ground one down totally with a pestle & reconstituted it but it was still crumbly, wee lumps in your bases, ick! Several others had the same probs...I heard Jinny was looking into it...

I ran across a nice box for my one stroke designs that allows a long stroke for a good color load. Its a plano box found in the fishing tackle section of walmart for under $2.50. I will spray paint it black like the small one because it looks too messy as is.
The small box is great for sponge brushes when I make princess crowns & masks.

Susan,
I would caution you against the spray painting as it will eventually flake off and could contaminant your paint. Especially since the oil in Snaz reacts with some plastics, who knows how it would react agains spray paint. You could probably find the same box in black to be safe.

Check Michael's. I found some green and pink ones that don't look nearly as rough as the clear once they get the paint on them.
Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Where do I get one of those brush holders? That's what I'm looking for!Winger1200 wrote:I found a photo that shows the small box's colors and the thin stripe of black with my foliage greens combo. The other dark colors in the others are blue & purple.
Special thanks Metina, for sharing your idea of the small box!!! I have two more awaiting more split colors, using the new method of stacking ; ) Can't have too many split cakes!!!

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
It is an ice cube tray... for making ice cubes to fit in bottles. I think people get them at Wal-Mart.
I can't see the point myself... but then, I don't re-use "dirty" brushes so sorting by the colour loaded on them is not an issue.

Wow - Fantastic work! Ya'll give me a great idea - on what to do with the extra paint left when the cake is almost gone... I can hand mold split cakes. I am so happy I found this forum.

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Alicia- I really like your laptop mini splits!!!!! I prefer the laptops for professional pop open and being easy to clean and keep nice looking!!! Great idea - and I have a spare one in my extra supplies! hmmmmm evil thoughts even tho I should be finishing Christmas - not making splits and another pallette case setup!
Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
This is great January stuff for the slow week. I think I need to start keeping a binder of all these great ideas so I can remember them all.
Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Alicia,
How often do you find you have to refill them? What method do you use to clean up? Baby wipes?

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
I just wipe with a clean sponge or facecloth. Beware cleaning paints with baby wipes, some brands react and cause a very nasty smell.
Re re-filling - well, how often do you refill your usual paints? Depends how busy it is, how deep i made them, which i use most, which are 'softer'...
I do re-squish them quite often as they wear unevenly ie the centre sinks a bit. So I use a clean palette knife or spoon to drag gently in from the edges, following the paint lines, to even it up.

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
these are my selfmade splitcakes...I just stick to the form of the small cakes...limiting my options offcourse...never thought you could warm it up...
Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Metina~ Sorry it has been a while since I have been on. I keep the plastic trash bag foam around the cakes clean by taking it off and wiping it with a babywipe if it is really dirty or I just wrap the wipe around my finger and spray it with a little water from my spray bottle. As for refilling it, I really have never had to. I have used this for a year and have only replaced the middle of my rose cake(the pink color) and my small rainbow needed to be replaced because it was running low but then I got the DFX small split cake so I have not done it. But it was easy to do. I like that I can have two sets of paint in there and only have to carry one case. I can now use the FPF bag I got at Fabbulas for parties because everything (and more!) fits!!!!!

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Photomamma, those are ice tube trays found in the kitchen section of Walmart for under five bucks. Wont paint without it - a fantastic organizer of color dedicated brushes in a variety of sizes. I like that it has big holes for easy retrival and return of the brushes, esp when Im busy. I just aim the brush handle in the general direction of the proper hole, and it slips rite in.
Hope this helps,
Susan

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
One question from Italy.....
What is your favourite brand of painting for your self-made split cakes? I tried with snazaroo but it looks a bit too much creamy and colors make a mess if I try to use them with a brush.
Many thanks in advance......

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Snazaroo should be fine, tho they are the 1st brand to melt if it is hot - they are soft. 1 of my faveourite split cakes is all snaz sparkle paints - but I do mainly use a sponge.
Aside from tat I prefer DFX/ Wolfe/TAG.

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
Bead containers with a cute case, 18 compartments in total. My brushes fit inside the case. I love, love, love the long stroke and my #12 brush fits just right.
This is all I need to tote around to paint faces.

Re: 2 Methods of Making Rainbow/ Split Cakes
SilverTongue, Snaz sparkling, metalic & electric are my favorite blending split & rainbow cakes for sponges, too but for my one stroke floral brush work, I use DFX red & white, dark & light green as the color seperation is more clear. I have a large DFX rainbow cake, too.

Lauri, where did you get the cases?
Cheers,
Susan
