Eye designs Empty Eye designs

Post by earthorange Mon Apr 25, 2011 7:33 pm

forgive me if this has been covered before; I did a pretty thorough search and not much came up. I'm preparing for my first paying gig in a couple of weeks (super-excited) and I'm trying to cover my bases. I'm nervous about a couple faces, one of which is an eye design. I discovered through trial and error that ye olde rule about all lines aiming toward a focal point (ie corner of the eye) helps tremendously, but mine was very simple (I'd load a pic but I'm typing from my phone) and I'd love some inspiration. Something women or teenage girls might like. Can you help?

I should mention I'm not so much looking for photos (though I guess they couldn't hurt:) but tips/tricks/things to keep in mind while creating those swirls, curls and dots!

Thanks,
Julie

I like this video:

I recommend Metina's dippy pot for great lines, dots, etc.

I find each design depends on face shape and skin colouring, eye colour, or even what they are wearing.
Ladies don't usually like you to mess too much with their makeup, so I stay away from the eye shadow and brow line.
Every on I do is different.
I have done Hen's Nights with all eye designs matching whatever outfit they are wearing.
This one is on my daughter, but thy usually look something like this....

Just make all of your lines point to a focal point and try your best to make all of the lines go thin thick thin... go back and add dots in all of the really thick lines... best advice I can give! oh, and white/black lines next to each other really pop.

Here are some that I did that you can try...

I find with eye designs scrolls/swirls, teardrops, and dots go a long way! Most of my eye design are just different combinations of those three elements and different colors.

Here are some examples to show just how wide a variety of designs you can do just using those 3 elements:

Thanks, guys. I've learned a lot already from these posts. I love the tribal look of Linda's pic, and what I like about Tash's is that using the brushstroke first gives me a framework to place the swirls, etc. I'm still getting the hang of feeling free with it and it needs refining, but I think I'm on my way...here's one from this morning

and my simple one from the other day:

What I'm having trouble with (aside from working on consistent teardrops) is "feeling" where to place things. I'm sure this will all come with practice...

(sorry they're so large; tried to make them smaller)

Good work! Yes, you will get the hang of proper placement as you get more used to doing designs like this, and looking at others' designs. Eventually it will come more naturally. Until then, just copy what appeals to you.

I tend to want to make everything start at the outside corner of the eye. Trying to break myself of that habit, since I love the look of starting at the inner-eye. If I am doing a design on both eyes, I usually make one side tilt upward, and the other side tilt downward for contrast. Sometimes the most simple designs have the greatest impact, so don't feel like you have to keep adding to it just because. Knowing when to stop was the hardest thing for me to learn! The more upscale the event the smaller the design.
Make the colors complement her wardrobe unless she asks otherwise.
Master you blending and strokes - women can be picky!
