Wow... So how many rainbow cakes did you end up getting from the 5 full cakes? Is it more cost effective to do it that way than buy them pre-made? I need new rainbow cakes and I think I'll end up needing maybe 3-4 full size and 2-3 small ones for the summer (I'm assuming). If it saves some money I would consider making my own like you did. It looks like you got some good quality cakes there!

It's definitely more cost effective to buy the cakes and then making a ton of them... I'm just lazy.

oooh yeah you save a lot of money doing it this way, plus it is kind of a fun and relaxing project Smile

I had enough paint for all of the cakes pictured and I probably could have made another smaller neon one as well but I didn't have another small case.

The cases I used are talked about in this thread http://www.facepaintforum.com/t4676-sharing-my-new-split-containers-with-you-go-get-them?highlight=containers

Those look great! I like making my own better as well, but, I often run out of time in between jobs and then end up ordering some. I like my own better cause I can measure it out the way I like in the length of the strips.

Those look great!

(Though, I must admit, when I read "stick a fork in me," my mind immediately went to special effects make up, and I was picturing something awesome and graphic with a fork sticking out of your skin or something).

Definitely gave me some inspiration (both the splits and the sfx idea).

Those look great Suzy! I especially like the Orange Pink and Yellow ones, they reming me of Lemonade for some reason... lol. Hey... Now I'm thirsty! XD

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, I so envy painters that make their own splits. I've tried so many times, but I cringe everytime I go to make a cut in a cake. Neutral I just can't bring myself to do it. I guess I'll just keep shelling out money for pre-made splits, lol.

Suzy, a question for you...

Do you find cutting up neons to be easier than cutting up metallic/pearls? I find metallics/pearls quite difficult (they crumble) and "regular" colors quite easy (they come out of container in beautiful little slabs). How do the neons compare, for you?

Thanks!

Punky no one is saying to cut up the cakes in your working palette. You just purchase a few additional cakes for the sole purpose of making splits. Or like I did when i first started...........There was nooooooooooooooo way I was gonna cut up my DFX cakes..........but I did have my old wolfe palette which still had a decent amount of paint left. So I hacked those up instead.

I have a pic of it posted on here in another thread. So take something old and give it a whirl

Well the neons were simple to cut... I had NO problems. The Primary colors were a challenge though because no matter what I did the yellow crumbled SO bad as well as the green that I originally wanted to use... I just ended up taking it out because it looked like a crumbly mess and replaced it with light green. Metallics are crumbly some timer but they are also pliable so that you can mush it into the shape you need... Better then the dry hard crumble that some primary colors do.
