Double loading

Hi,

I'm having trouble double loading my round brush (for flowers, etc.). I watched a YouTube video of Lisa Joy Young where she loaded her second color with a (seemingly) dry dfx cake...If i don't moisten the second color, it doesn't pick up any color, and when i do moisten the second color (I'm also using dfx), the brush gets so wet the paint almost runs on the skin. What's the proper technique?

Don't know the 'proper' technique - but I can tell you what I do.
I spray the two colours I'm going to use with water load up on white or whatever then touch the end of my brush on my towel then just circle the tip in the second colour. Usually gives me the right consistency, and I mix it up between Paradise DFX and Tag.

This will work well, but be careful how much you spray dfx. It can get pretty gloppy & takes a while to dry.

I had a lot of difficulty with those too, until I figured out the part where you get the second colour of paint wet FIRST. I kept trying to dip just the tip in water after I'd loaded the first colour, then go to the second colour! Now I have a small well in most of my paints, and I just put a couple drops of water in there before I start loading my brush.

In this instruction, for the second colour they use a "dippy pot" which is pre-liquidized paint:

The dippy pot seems like a great idea...especially since you could also use it for dots, etc. as Metina mentioned in another thread. Is the dippy pot something that would keep its consistency more or less if kept covered?

This is probably gross, but if I'm loading white then a color on the tip for a flower or whatever, I load my white then I put a drop of water on my pinkie fingertip and rub it into whatever color till it's the right "thickness." Then I can just pick up the color on the tip and it's never too wet. This is gross, isn't it? That's why my jeans are always covered with paint, EEK.

Yeah, I try to avoid sticking my fingers in the paint(not to mention I'm a face toucher & would have all sorts of colors on my face ). You can do the same thing with a brush.

Earthorange, I don't know. I don't use a dippy pot myself, I just usually have a well (hole) somewhere on my paint that I keep pretty wet. I have a water squeeze bottle that I use to drop a few water drops into it with, or I'll just add water from my brush before I load it. But usually I forget to do that, so I use the squeeze bottle.

I have a little spray bottle - a spritzer.
before I start doing flowers I spray one squirt onto whatever colours I'm going to use - it's really fast and it works really well. I have never had a problem with the DFX going goopy. Snaz and paradise yes... but never DFX.

For me it is as simple as wetting my brush dabbing the secondary color to moisten that one spot not to pick up color but place a bead of water, instead of spritzing the whole cake. I go to my primary color and load it go back to the secondary and pick up that color. Never runny and picks up paint easily

LOL... I'm with you AmberMarie---"Dippy Pot" sounds like a penalty box for people who never get the punchline....
