Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
Tash wrote:I find that if i dip my brush and go to load and it's too dry you can touch the tip of the brush into the water again and reload. You do have to be carefull about to much water. I have to say I got three arty cakes to try out and I've just reached the bottom on two of them and I still haven't mastered the loading yet. I find the arty cake holders too small and I have to hold it in one hand while I'm loading it. Very frustrating to have to keep picking it up for another load! So I don't know if I'm going to replace them yet. My husband keeps offering to buy me the whole splitcake/ rainbow pallet from silly farm, I haven't taken him up on this yet because there were other things I needed to get first, and I'm tempted to use this money for advertising instead of more paint.
Anyway I know you've seen this pic already but the whole thing was done with a purple/red/pink/gold/white arty cake (sorry forgotten what is was called) and the 'leaves' artycake.
Thought it might help.
cheers.
I wish my husband proposed something like that to me!...I love all those arty and rainbowcakes from sillyfarm!
Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
I am a big fan of the split cakes big and small. I currently use the "Arty" (15) and (3) DFX minis and the larger DFX(2) and (6) sillyfarm rainbow split cakes. Big "WOW" with little effort once you have got the loading technique down. People always ooh and ahh when they see the results, and are like how'd you do that.
Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
I like just using a sponge w/ the arty cakes & pressing the colors in. I'm getting better w/ them w/ the brush. I love the 50 gm ones Metina sells. I also think the arty cakes are just too small.
Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
Well I finally caved in at 2:00 a.m. this (Fri.) morning and decided to see what all the hub bub was about making your own split cakes. Soooo as I have said in my other posts on this subject, I was wayyyyyyy to chicken to even think about cutting up my paints. So what did I do you ask???? I raided the Snaz paints I gave my 10 yr. old daughter popped out a few colors and got my exacto knife out. Shhhhhhh don't tell her lol.
I found an old empty wolfe basic mini palette attached to an old Klutz face paint book from years ago. So I ended up with 6 mini color combos.
End Result: Did I do it? Yes I did.
Will I do it again? Uhmmmmm NO I won't LOL
Trying to cut up those paints and figuring out what would look good with what???? More than one person can bear
OK so maybe I am being a bit melodramatic
Some of the combos were pretty decent.......while other were more like What were you thinkin???
I resolve that I shall now and forever be a rainbow cake split cake arty cake consumer, it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it.
But thank you to you guys for inspiring me enought to give it a whirl

Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
If you don't like the color combos you made, you can undo them. I like to take a brush & swipe the colors next to eash other on my arm. If I like the combo, then I make it. You can also look at other cakes you like & try to imitate them(sorry, copy is such a bad word:-) Show us some of your results?
Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
Psalm it was my "so called" attempt at thinking "Out the Box" .......(chuckles @ self) tyring to come up with combos that hadn't been done or at least I had seen. Who was I kidding??? I don't know maybe it's because I used the snaz....and I am not a big fan of snaz....as they don't cover well at least to me.
I will get pics up later today.

I think you have some very nice ones. Would be nice to know the color combos so we can "permanently borrow" your work. Nice slippers by the way.

very nice, what color combos did you use...

Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
I can't see what's not to like. I'm loving the 1st one on the left! It reminds me of the ocean. I kindof like the one in the center too. They're all good colors!
Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
I love the colors that you used. I really like the blue green and yellow???? the one in the middle!
Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
Yeah, I like them all, Changing. You shouldn't give up making the split cakes - save yourself a lot of money. Now, you can easily use those ones all up in making rainbow butterflies, backgrounds for quick eye designs that you do in black or white linework, tropical background with black silhouette linework on top - etc. Stick a bit of glitter on top after the linework (or before) and you've got some quick, impressive designs.
Yeah! I'm so fired up with the idea, I'm off to try for some quick split cake designs myself! See ya!

Look at those petal shapes you've made in the first pic - they'd make great flowers, wouldn't they? Very 60s and 70s-ish looking psychedelic flowers - cool!

Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?
Melissa, about the black taking over - when I use a wide brush on these cakes, I steer well to the side away from the black, so that you are only getting a sliver of it at the very edge of the brush. I spritz the cake, and then while loading the brush, decide if it needs more, and then just spritz more until it's right.

Tash, I agree that they are too small and fiddly. Here's what I'm going to do, and maybe some of you might like to try this. I'm going to get a piece of plywood or other strong, thinnish material, cut it to about a laptop palette size, paint it black, and glue pieces of velcro on both the bottoms of the arty cakes and the plywood, positioning them where I want them, of course, before gluing. Can you make sense of this?
They will stay firmly in place while you use them, but of course the setup is very versatile, because they can be taken off to refill, or exchange for other, more favourite cakes.
