How do you answer that??? Empty How do you answer that???

Post by hippiemama Thu Feb 27, 2014 8:02 am

So i recently had someone ask me how i justify being a face painter when the make up is knowingly hamful for people??? She was going on about a blog post that confirmed that 10 face paints tested positive for lead, and such. ... I have to tell you, i was blindsided, i have NEVER had this happen? Anyone ever have t his happen? What do you say?

Ask them how they justify their opinions being more important than anyone else's.

Ask them how they justify believing everything they read on a random blog, and attacking a total stranger as a result! Or perhaps provide a bit of education, maybe show her your MSDS's if you have them!

"Why do people keep hiring face painters that don't use the proper paints? My paints are made of FDA approved ingredients and are as completely safe as your foundation.

The people you should be attacking is companies that are trying to make a quick buck on the popularity of face painting and releasing to the market rebranded acrylic paints and putting "face paints" on the label.

Or the mommie blogs that keep showing how easy it is to make homemade face paints and showing all sorts of concoctions from hand lotion and cornstarch and use food coloring to color them?

Don't attack the professional who uses the right products, in the right way."

I have the MSDS printed out for each brand, in a plastic sleeve. Two summers ago, I overheard a mother telling her daughter that she could not get her face painted because that paint is not safe. I pardoned myself and told her that I overheard what she had said and I chatted with her about safety and hygiene. I handed her the MSDS and it took her about 15 minutes to carefully go through every page. It turned out that this woman was the head scientist for a very large international make up company. She allowed her daughter to be painted for the very first time ever.

Happy Painting!

MSDS. I had someone come to me at a pumpkin patch with some sort of "alternative" facepaint that was color-free/dye-free (fun-free) who all but demanded I paint her kids with that paint, going on and on about how my paints were "dangerous" ...to which I politely but very firmly explained I could not use my brushes in her paints due to insurance reasons, that she was welcome to paint her kids with her own brushes, but I would only be offering my services with my products and tools, and offered her the MSDS sheets in case she'd like to see facts. She was my nutbar lady for the day Smile The reaction from other parents waiting in line behind her while she vocalized from her soapbox was pretty awesome. She realized that a) she wasn't going to get her way, and b) there were plenty of other people who had no problem with being painted waiting behind her, and left the line.

Yep.. This was a very similar situation, thanks for sharing your experience. I just offered her some info on my makeup, told her i am a professional, and reminded her, gently, that having a child painted is parents choice....its also a choice to not paint them, and she could trust the parents in line to make good decisions for their own children. :-) but yikes.... Definately getting the msds sheets.

Back in 2009 that lead test result was popular and I blogged about it here

My immediate response would have been “That’s why you should NEVER use the cheap stuff they sell in the stores and why I pay big money for the good stuff!” That would’ve shut her down swiftly and made you look even more valuable to the people waiting to get painted. Having the MSDS sheets is always a good idea and I love how that worked out for you LISA.

I think the reason it even came up is because of the recent incident in the UK where kids reacted to some black facepaint being used at a public event and the photos were pretty bad. The headlines read: Parents' panic after kids left 'branded' by FACE PAINT at family fun day
