Test the spring and softness of the bristles on your arm. If it is super stiff, you won't get good swirls and difficult to make thin, thick, thin lines. It does however need some spring to it so it comes back to a nice point when you use it.

I know some painters love the American Painter brushes, but they didn't last long for me. They lost their points fast so I use them for flower peddles.
