Which arty cakes? Empty Which arty cakes?

Post by mattybfunnie Sun Jul 15, 2012 8:47 pm

I want to add some split and rainbow cakes to my face painting kit. I will definitely be getting a neon rainbow cake, but also want to get one or two arty cakes.

Which two arty cakes would you recommend? I would want ones that could be used for either boys or girls.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Here in the FPF shop they have a beautiful selection of 1-stroke cakes.

A nice one for both boys and girls is the pearl dragon cake.

Another one could be Dolphin

There are so many though. It's a very personal choice.
Have fun!

What are the dimensions of the Prisma cakes? They look like two arty cakes side by side, so you can pick up one side or the other, or the middle.

Prisma = paradise. Paradise paints are similar-ish to kryolan and FAB. They are a soft consistency that blends together very well. In comparison, one strokes from the forum are TAG - slightly harder consistency and very good for linework (comparable to Wolfe or DFX)

One discussion on Arty cakes versus the TAG one-strokes mentioned that the Arty cakes are made with different types of paint in them causing uneven wear. I love the TAG myself. Little more definition of color. Check out Denise Cold's YouTube video on brush loading and you'll see what I mean.

I'm not 100% sure, but I have the large DFX rainbow cakes and I think they are the same shape as the Prisma cakes. They are the size of two of the rectangular arty cakes side by side. Great size for sponging on bases.

Ugh, where's a tape measure when you need one!

here is a picture of my kit before I butchered the last two Tag holes on the insert there, look at the top left insert, there is a Tag one stroke strait below and beside a Prisma. and over to the left colum there is a Tag Rainbow and above it a DFX rainbow then a tag skin tone.

The Prismas are about equal to 1 and a half one stokes- but why do I have so many one strokes - because the Prismas I find way more difficult to work with. I use them more as bases, occasionally though I do use them as one strokes.

I do like both the arty cakes and the Tag but as I live in Australia I go with TAG. as I find for me both are easier than Prismas to work with.

hope this helps with size etc.

Sue, your selection is fabulous Smile I would chop up most of those colours and make my own rainbows in a snap. I find the process kind of soothing lol

Jessica, I have a hard time deciding which colors to put with what. Does that come from expirience or looking at other rainbows and chosing that way..

Sue, I am green with envy over your paint selection! Mine is getting pretty extensive, but it isn't housed so nicely. It all looks rather rag-tag.

Oh I totally rip off the real splits lol.

I actually sat down one day and made a list of what cake had what colour and in what order. I will no longer be purchasing split cakes for $20.00, I will be making them for $7.00-$10.00 Smile

My bf was like, "But what a waste, you'll have so many of the same splits, why wouldn't you just want to buy a bunch of different ones?" Rolling Eyes

They just don't get it...

When I started I bought two prisma cakes because I could use them as a base with a sponge or as a one stroke with a brush. The arc en ciel is nice because it makes a great rainbow base, and I can use the red/orange side for dragons, flames, ect or the blue/green for mermaids and watery looks. I also got the fleur to make flowers and leaves. For a beginner I feel I get a little more for my $

I did order a bright leaf Arty cake, but when i pulled out my kit the other day and realized how low my paints were getting I sat down and turned EVERYTHING into split, rainbow or one stroke cakes. I had a Wolfe FX metallic/ neon palette and turned all of the neons into a rainbow cake and then used the empty containers for my one stroke cakes.

My husband looked at it and goes, why did you do that? They are all just going to smear together.

Jessica- no they do not get it. Even after explaining the cost difference, showing him pics and demonstrating them. *sigh....
