Updating my Spiderman Empty Updating my Spiderman

Post by Denise Cold Fri Apr 27, 2012 10:25 am

Have an event this weekend and also wanted to get ready for my town fair in June so here is my updated Spidey. I've been researching all the different masks and did it the way that I found most appealing and that I could duplicate over and over again. I ended up using my 1/2" Square for outlining the eyes and I LOVE IT! It gives it that comic book feel I like of Corey's masks but it really quick to do. I'm still getting used to line work over starblends but I like the way it turned out. Don't know if I want to do a spider though...are the boys disappointed if you don't do it?

D.

PS: Forgot to mention that I added some white paint to the eyes on this version to see the difference so it's a little brighter. I'll post the all Starblends and black only version below. Tell me which eye you like better. The more angular top one or the rounded eye below.

I like the white highlights... I love doing masks rather than the whole face has a much better 'Superhero' feel to it. Love the eye shape!

I love the eye shape. I haven't been to happy with mine lately and may give this a try. I think it looks more comic book like.

I agree with all of the above! I didn't see a dramatic enough difference between the white paint and the starblend in the photo to make the paint worth it over the benefits of starblends - especially right over the eyes like that! Little boys can be so weird about their eyes!

I definitely prefer that eye shape to what we usually see. I've been doing something along those lines (not quite as thick, but similar shape) for a bit and it is much easier with that shape to make it look more masculine and less "curly" than many versions.

Here's a little step-by-step of the eye part with a 1/2" flat brush.
Updating my Spiderman P1160013
(My wrist is making that look like I put a bump on the top line...it's straight.)

Here's a closeup of the twist...two of those into the corner of the eye. If you want to touch-up, I would wait until you have the #2 loaded for the webs and touch any spots missed.

Updating my Spiderman P1160014

If you like the rounded eye better you do the outside of the eye with the brush flat and then just draw the brush up toward the eye...don't twist the brush...the bristles should be flat up to the corner of the eye...it's like a calligraphy "c"...the angle makes the thick and thin.

I really like yours Perry...it is one in my inspiration file. All of your superheroes are fabulous. I especially like Thor...hopefully with the movie I'll have more superhero parties this year. At one party I started making the boys choose something different (4 hulks later...grrrr.) It's more fun that way so they can be the Justice League or something.

I agree Becky, if I was charging the $10 rate I would do all that and a bag of chips...a bag of chips being web shooter hands. Smile I do like the highlight on the bigger eye bands so I'll probably always do that...

So what do you guys think about the spider? I found a really cool silver Spidey online on amusementwithatwist.com. I thought the tribal-y webs were too hard but I LOVE the look of the face. I might try something like they did at the top with the spider though.

I like yours too Linda...I think I might try the spider like yours...similar to the silver Spidey. Do you think kids expect a spider or do we just do them.

Post by Perry Noia Fri Apr 27, 2012 3:37 pm

the spider is cool... I don't do it because I'm a bit of a purist with Spider-Man faces and the comics have a spider on his chest, not his face... but it's a good spider if you want to have one there. Very Happy

I'm flattered that you like my Spider-Man. It really is necessary to look at a bunch of actual comic pictures and break it down for yourself rather than just painting what you "think" it looks like... vertical teardrop eyes drive me insane.... about the same as the curly teardrops.

I like your spider. Oh, the kids will complain if you skip the spider (parents too). I know, I forgot it once.... I try to do the spider 1st before the linework or even the eye outline. I find that many kids get super fidgety at the end of the face painting & will be too wiggly to get a good spider. I can still do the webs on a wiggly child:-)

Updating my Spiderman Empty Spiderman eyes

Post by Denise Cold Sun Apr 29, 2012 3:36 am

Okay...so I made at LEAST a dozen Spiderman designs today and I now know this...I'm not doing SPIDERS! I actually love doing spiders as a quick design but looking back at my pictures I have some serious spider issues. I didn't want to take the time to do Pashur worthy spiders so I ended up doing some quickie version and they look like TICKS! Arrrggh! That being said I am a HUGE starblend fan after today. The boys actually sat still for the designs. I think the Starblends must take away that cold brush/knife feeling that boys usually get, even with line work.

SOW...Please forgive my line work...it's so rough but I was LOVING my eyes. I think I will do the rounded version though. The angle version looked great on my larger face but on little boys it was a little overwhelming...it was like EYES! But I'm so happy with the design (except the spider of course) because it was duplicatible (sp?) over and over. Here's some field pictures.

Her line work is better because I didn't have to death-grip her! LOL
